History

Pallavaram was originally called Pallavapuram. It has existed since the times of the Pallava king Mahendravarman I, who built magnificent temples there.

A cave shrine excavated on the Pallavaram Hills is one of the oldest temples in Chennai and predates Mamallapuram. The British archaeologist Robert Bruce Foote discovered artifacts and stone implements belonging to the Old Stone and Iron Age here.

Pallavaram in recent times has grown significantly as a residential area. Many skyscrapers have been raised in the past 3 years by India's top most builders as this place is seen as good investment source for the future. Schools, Colleges and university are available in vast number.

It is a roadway hub, as all buses coming to Chennai from the South have to pass through this very place. A 200-foot road being constructed will provide easier access to Old Mahabalipuram Road (New Chennai) and Grand South Trunk (GST) Road.

Pallavaram is located just next (within 1 km) to Chennai Airport (International & Domestic). It's an IT corridor and a business city as we can see many new corporates have been setup offices in Pallavaram.

Transport

Pallavaram is well connected to the city of Chennai by public transportation services including the famous electric train service that was built during British rule. Pallavaram is located in the Beach - Tambaram-Chengalpattu suburban railway network.

Pallavaram is around 1 km away from the Chennai Airport. The perungudi bypass road connects Adambakkam, Nanganallur, Madipakkam, Medavakkam, velacheri and perungudi.

The Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST) that connects various south Indian cities to Chennai passes through this township.

In the 1960s and 1970s taking a walk along the GST road was a common activity of elderly residents of Pallavaram; however, this has become uncommon today as the road now has heavy traffic at most times of the day. Train service is one of the important transport source for the residents here.

Buses to Tambaram, Chennai Beach, T Nagar, High Court, Avadi etc are available at regular intervals from Pallavaram. Pallavaram bus stop is a boon to the thousands of residents in and around this area to reach the main road and some other important landmarks in Chennai city.
