Pastel Chime (ぱすてるチャイム
?) is a Japanese adventure role-playing game released by AliceSoft in 1998. There are two other games in
the series: Pastel Chime Continue(ぱすてるチャイムContinue, 2005) and PasCha
C++(ぱすちゃC++, 2005). Based on a universe that
loosely combines real world elements with a magical world, the game
revolves around the romance that develops between the
protagonists and two fictional continents named 'Rubens' and
'Colwayd'. The creators themselves define the series' genre as
"Romance & Character-Development RPG with Swords and
Magics"(剣と魔法の恋愛育成RPG).
Releases
The original Pastel Chime, released in 1998, is often
said to be the icon of AliceSoft's early projects. It features
school love stories with traditional themes of a CRPG and that of dating sims. For example,
being friendly with the girls allows the gamer to complete the
"quests" since their help is needed to go through dungeons, defeat
enemy monsters, etc. This was a new concept in the early years of
both CRPG and Eroge in
Japan.
On June 17, 2005, AliceSoft released a sequel named Pastel
Chime Continue. After gaining popularity such as being a
featured product in many Japanese game stores, [1]
AliceSoft decided to make a side story of Pastel Chime
Continue with extra episodes. The end product was named
PasCha C++ and released on December 9, 2005.
Synopsis
- Pastel Chime
- After the discovery of Colwayd, the world is in the Age of
Adventure. The protagonist, Aiba Kaito, became a student of Maizuru
Akademy several years ago to be a professional adventurer. However,
due to his laziness, he doesn't even qualify to graduate the school
yet. Muselle, a childhood friend of him worries about it and tries
to make him an adventure aspirant again. One day, in the first
dungeon trial, Kaito exposes Muselle to danger because of his
mistake and gets severely shocked by it. He then realizes that he
wasted years and decides to start training himself harshly.
- Pastel Chime Continue
- 10 years have passed after the episodes of Pastel
Chime. Nagihara Yūki is a student of Falnese Private AS(AS
stands for Adventurers' School), an elite school in the Republic of
Vianki. One day he dyes his hair red, which is forbidden by the
school regulation, to show his will against the school policy.
After a turmoil the school finally expels Yūki, but fortunately the
Kōryō Akademy, another adventurers' school in the Kingdom of
Rastal, accepts his application of transfer. Dramatic encounters
and reunions occur as he is transferred, and it helps him to walk
the earnest way of mature adventurer.
Characters
Pastel
Chime Continue
- Nagihara Yūki (薙原ユウキ)
- Human. The protagonist and a player character. His father, a
professional adventurer, has been missing since ten years ago, and
Yūki wants to be an adventurer too to succeed his father's will. He
was originally a student of the Falnese Private AS, but starts a
new life in Kōryō as the game starts. His class as an adventurer
isn't decided yet (entrusted to players).
- Rindō Rina (竜胆リナ)
- Human. Yūki's childhood friend, whom Yūki left behind in order
to enter the Falnese Private AS, and met again as Yūki is
transferred to Kōryō. As a novice magician, she is a would-be "teen idol magician". She is
warmhearted, popular among friends, but picky only to Yūki.
- Saika S. Falnese (斎香・S・ファルネーゼ)
- Human. The only granddaughter of Georg Falnese, whose name is
the world's most famous weapon company. Like Yūki, she was a
student of the Falnese AS, and Yūki idolized her privately. A year
ago she left the Falnese AS although the circumstances were totally
unknown. Yūki encounters her when he came to Kōryō and gets very
surprised. She is a calm and elegant top student and is experienced
in the use of swords as her family manufactures swords, but has a
poor knowledge of the world outside home and school.
- Phil Ehart (フィル・イハート)
- Elf. A vigorous girl with a characteristic brown skin and
twin-tailed hairstyle, who is to be a shinjutsushi(神術士, literally 'godly technician'),
whose main ability is healing. She makes an unexpected visit to
Yūki who has just been transferred, and claims she is the fiancée of Yūki. Mostly
she is childlike, loves manga
and sweet cookies, and is overactive which causes her frequent
conflict with Rina.
- Lucy Minseard (ルーシー・ミンシアード)
- Another elf girl who is to be a scout, formally
dojutsushi(盗術士,
literally 'thief technician'). When Yūki got trapped in a dungeon,
she appeared and told him the way to exit, which eventually saved
Yūki's life. Every day she tries to gather lucky items with a black
cat named Nīsan (which can mean both 'Mr. Meow' and 'elder brother'
in Japanese), but even with all those items, she herself is always
astonishingly unfortunate. She is not so friendly with many people
because she is considered somewhat weird. She can speak cat language.
Background
There are two big continents in the universe of Pastel
Chime, called Rubens and Colwayd respectively. Rubens is
homeland of the human and elves with
a complex history, having 7 countries currently.
The Sea of Rhye, which divides Rubens and Colwayd, was covered
in a dense fog for a long time which made ocean voyage impossible.
One day, the fog suddenly disappeared: although it's suggested that
magic was involved. Since the fog cleared: ocean voyage became
possible and the people of Rubens were excited and started to
explore the Sea of Rhye, and discovered the continent Colwayd. This
was the opening of the "Age of Adventure" since the discovery of
Colwayd made many adventurers eager to explore the new
continent.
During the start of the "Age of Adventure", many adventurers
were unfortunate and never made it to Colwayd since many of them
went without enough preparation or knowledge. People now believe
that the journey to the new continent is stable. However a few
people are worried about the world that seems to be peaceful,
because of the ancient prophecy about the "Reincarnation of Prince
of the Darkness."
According to the game map, Rubens and Colwayd are totally
fictional. However the entire civilization of the Pastel
Chime world is very similar to the contemporary earth, from
the real world objects such as bus
and mobile phone
to the language that appears in the names of the characters; Kaito
is a Japanese name, but Muselle is a European one. In Pastel
Chime Continue, even a name with mixed languages appears;
Saika S. Falnese(斎香・S・ファルネーゼ)
is neither a Japanese name nor non-Japanese name.
