The Perthus Tunnel is a tunnel under construction between France and Spain.

It is being built for the high speed railway line between Barcelona and Montpellier under the Eastern Pyrenees.

It forms a key part of the line and has been designed to allow for freight as well as passenger traffic. It will be 8.171 km (about 5 miles) long.

Work on the tunnel and its links between Figueres and Perpignan is due for completion in February 2009. RENFE is extending the standard gauge Spanish High Speed Rail network to join it and much of the work between Barcelona and Girona has been done[1]. However, technical difficulties in the tunnelling under Barcelona and Girona have delayed the rail link to the project, now expected to open in 2013 (forecast of December 2008).

On the other side of the border, SNCF has not authorised the LGV Mediteranée and no work has been done on the French side between Nimes and Perpignan, a distance about 200 kilometers (124 mi).
