Petersburg is a small fishing town in the Southeastern region of Alaska.

By plane

Alaska Airlines [1] provides two daily jet flights, and various float plane and air charters also serve the area.

By boat

One of the charms of Petersburg is that it doesn't have a deep water port, so it's not accessible by big cruise ships, but some smaller ships stop there. The Alaska Marine Highway provides regular ferry service.

Get around

There is a local taxi and some local shuttle services. The local roads are also nice for bicycling, although the size of the island limits the overall distance one can travel. Rental cars are available from both the hotels in town. Boats can even be rented from the Scandia House.

  • Le Conte Glacier - the southernmost tidewater glacier in the northern hemisphere. The glacier moves extremely quickly, offering almost continual calving, including underwater calving leading to "shooters" as icebergs rise rapidly to the surface from the hundreds of feet of submerged ice. Hundreds of harbor seals also inhabit the fjord created by the glacier; closer to the face you're likely to see them lolling about on icebergs.
  • Whale watching - as Petersburg is located on the south end of Frederick Sound, where many humpback whales summer, it is an ideal starting point for whale watching. Although it's less comfortable to be out on the sound during rougher weather, days with lots of waves are better for seeing aerial displays.

  • Clausen Memorial Museum [2] has local history exhibits.
  • Blind River Rapids, mile 14.2 on Mitkof Highway [3] A boardwalk through the muskeg to Blind Slough, where the salmon are numerous and other wildlife is often visible.
  • Sea Kayaking Wilderness kayak camping tours to Frederick Sound to view humpback whales and other marine wildlife. Also kayak tours to the LeConte Glacier to paddle among the icebergs. Tour lengths of one week, three days, and one day available. 360-378-5767 or 888-589-4253, whales@sea-quest-kayak.com Sea Kayaking Tours from Petersburg, Alaska
  • Behind the school there's a boardwalk through the muskeg (extremely soft nutrient poor meadow) that's worth walking.

Buy

Because Petersburg doesn't have a deep water port it doesn't get the large cruise ships, thus it isn't overrun with the large cruise line operated tourist shops that plague many such coastal towns. There are a few little locally owned galleries with local artists, and a bookstore with some nice coffee table books, but most of the town actually exists for the local population.

  • Coastal Cold Storage Assorted fried seafood and daily specials in a take-out ambiance, but the real treats are the vacuum packed smoked fish in the cooler. Great breakfast sandwiches too.
  • Tina's Kitchen. On the main road, does good halibut and salmon burgers. Summertime only.
  • LaFonda Genuine Mexican food served in Kito's Kave on Sing Lee Alley. Take out is available from their window if you wnt to avoid the smoke of the bar.
  • Papa Bear's Pizza Pizza, wings, burgers and other American fare. Ice cream is available.
  • Helse A sandwich shop with healthier choices.
  • Beachcomber Located at about 4 mile of Mitkof Highway this summertime restaurant and bar primarily serve local seafood from a limited but tasty menu.

Drink

There are two bars open to the public. Harbor Bar is located on main street and Kito's Kave is a short distance away on Sing Lee Alley. There are Moose and Elk's lodges for members as well.

  • Scandia House The newer hotel. Has a jacuzzi suite available. Located in the center of downtown. Has a coffee shop on the first floor.
  • Tides Inn Also located close to the center of town.
  • Morning Mist Bed and Breakfast [4] - Mel and Sherry Stockton are the great hosts.
  • Water's Edge Bed and Breakfast [5] - the delightful host Barry is a very friendly person.

From LoveToKnow 1911

PETERSBURG, a city and port of entry of Virginia, U.S.A., on the Appomattox river, at the head of navigation, about r1 m. from its mouth, and 22 m. S. of Richmond. Pop. (1890), 22,680; (1900), 21,810, (10,751 negroes); (19ro), 24,127. It is served by the Atlantic Coast Line, the Seaboard Air Line and the Norfolk & Western railways. The river, which is here spanned by two steel bridges and one frame bridge, is navigable to this point for vessels of 8 ft. draught at mean high water, and has been greatly improved by the Federal government, which in 1909 was engaged in deepening the whole channel to 12 ft. at mean high water and in excavating at Petersburg a new channel into which to deflect the river. In and about the city there is much of historic and scenic interest. At Blandford, a suburban hamlet, is the picturesque old Blandford church, erected about 1 734. Petersburg has two public parks, and among its institutions are a home for the sick (1886), an orphanage for girls and another for negroes, the state central hospital for the insane (negroes), the southern female college (non-sectarian, 1863), the university school for boys, the Bishop Payne divinity school (Protestant Episcopal) for negroes, and the Virginia normal and industrial institute (opened in 1883), also for negroes. There are two national cemeteries near Petersburg - Poplar Grove (about 4 m. south), containing about 6200 graves, and City Point (about 9 m. east), containing about 5 o graves; and in Blandford cemetery there are about 30,000 graves of Confederate dead. In this cemetery General William Phillips is buried, and there is a monument to Captain McRae, commander of the "Petersburg Volunteers," whose bravery in1812-1813prompted President Madison to call Petersburg the "Cockade City." The falls above the city furnish abundant water-power, and the city has various manufactures. The factory product was valued at $5,89 0 ,574 in 1905, 11.3% more than in 1goo; in both 1900 and 1905 Petersburg ranked f3urth among the cities of the state in the value of factory products. From Petersburg are shipped quantities of trunks and bags, peanuts, tobacco and cotton. In 1909 the foreign trade, wholly imports, was valued at $360,774. The city was formerly in Chesterfield, Dinwiddie and Prince George counties, but is now independent of county government.

An Indian village formerly stood on or near the site of the present city, and Fort Henry was built here by the whites in 1645. Petersburg was founded in 1733 by Colonel William Byrd (1674-1744) and Peter Jones, and was named (first Peter's Point, and then Petersburg) in honour of the latter; in 1748 it was incorporated as a town. On the 25th of April 1781 a skirmish was fought in front of Petersburg between a British force of about 3000 under General William Phillips (1731?-1781) and about one-third of that number of American militia under Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben; the Americans were defeated, and the British occupied the town. In the following month the British again entered Petersburg (General Phillips dying here on the 13th), but they were soon dislodged by Lafayette who shelled the town. General Winfield Scott was born near Petersburg, and practised law here for two years before he entered the army. Petersburg was chartered as a city in 1850.
