Liebetanz was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, the daughter of a German IT engineer
working for IBM and an art loving
mother. She attended the Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium
in Kaarst where the family
lived in the 1970s. Interested in photography from a young age, she started
experimenting with photography at the Dutchess Community College
in Poughkeepsie, New York
where the family moved in 1985. She studied at the Brooks
Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara,
California.
In 1997 Liebetanz married psychologist Horst Seele, who changed his
name to Seele-Liebetanz to assume her name and with whom she has
two sons.
She moved to New
York City in 1991, where she started working with photographers
like Christopher Little, Peter Serling and even the
late Rudi Molacek.
Liebetanz set up a studio in the Garment District in Manhattan
at 29th Street and worked primarily on people photography in the
affluent late 1990s. She became American citizen in 2004.
Since 2004 Liebetanz is often seen in Bremen, Germany, where she continues her extensive work as people and travel photographer. Her works appeared in publications and magazines in the United States, as well as in Austria “Wienerin” and several German newspapers.
She established her particular style marked by intimate, symbolic scenes, often in a natural environment.
She had exhibitions in Berlin, Vienna and Santa Barbara. She also works in portraiture for editorial and more fantastical studies. Liebetanz is extremely fond of her hometown New York, and travels on a regular basis across the Atlantic.
