From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In pharmacokinetics, a Phase 1 reaction is a class of metabolic actions, primarily performed in the liver.

Actions include oxidation, reduction, and hydrolysis. [1]

Most of these actions reduce toxicity, but it is possible for some to enhance toxicity.

Phase 1 reactions are also used to convert prodrugs into active drugs.
