He spent 5 seasons at Auxerre since promoted to first team.

AS Roma

2004–05

Mexès was signed by A.S. Roma in June 2004. Roma was later found guilty of misconduct as AJ Auxerre did not agree to the transfer; it was solely the decision of the player. Mexès was suspended[2] but later the ban was temporarily lifted.[3] Mexès played his first Serie A match on 12 September 2004 against ACF Fiorentina. In February 2005 the appeal on the 6 week ban was rejected[4] and Mexès was out of the squad until April. The saga settled by Mexès or AS Roma had to pay Auxerre €7million.[5]

2005–06

After a difficult first season with the capitoline club, Mexès began the 2005-06 campaign on the bench, leaving the central defender spot to Sammy Kuffour.[citation needed] The transfer misconduct of Mexes caused the club to be suspended from signing player except free agents in July 2005,[6] but the ban temporarily lifted in August.[7] Which Kuffour was one of the free agent. However, as Kuffour was on national team duty for Ghana, Mexès slowly gained playing time. As the club did not sign anyone due to the ban. He rapidly became a key player for Luciano Spalletti's squad. On "Sammy" Kuffour's return, Mexes retained his spot. Mexès played 9 out of possible 10 for Roma at UEFA Cup. He played at Coppa Italia 2005–06 final. Giallorossi finished 5th and only able to play at next year UEFA Cup, but due to 2006 Italian football scandal, Roma was awarded 2nd and made Mexès able to play for Roma at UEFA Champions League.

2006–07

As one of the key member of Roma, he formed a solid defense with Cristian Chivu. The club reached UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals. The club faced Internazionale again at Coppa Italia 2006–07 final. Partner with Ferrari, Chivu and Panucci. Roma won 7-4 in aggregate and a 6-2 won in the 1st leg. Giallorossi also finished 2nd in Serie A with the 3rd least goal conceded.

2007-08

Although saw the left of Chivu, Mexes formed a new partnership with Juan, Panucci and Ferrari in the central defense. Giallorossi reached UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals again, in although lost to that season champion Manchester United again within 1 year. In domestic league, Roma narrowed the 11 points behind Internazionale and eventually finished 2nd behind Internazionale with a 3 points gap and 2nd least goal conceded behind Internazionale. At 2008 Coppa Italia Final, Mexes scored the opening goal for Roma and Giallorossi eventually defended the title in 2-1 won.

2008–09

Half-way past the midpoint of the 2008/2009 season and Philippe is now considered fundamental to Roma and he has stated on many occasions that he intends to spend his entire career in Rome with Roma. He also stated that he will stay because of the love that he has for the club. Many Romanisti look at him as their role model, for the various times that he was linked with other clubs and did not join just to stay with Roma. When his teammate Christian Chivu left Roma to join FC Inter, Philippe said that this "treachery" to the club will never be repeated by him.[citation needed]

With Mexès in defense, Roma qualified for the knockout stage of UEFA Champions League. Mexes missed the second leg against Arsenal and Roma lost in 6–7 penalty shootout. But without powerful new signing, the defense line leds by Mexès and Juan conceded the 5th highest goals in the domestic league.

2009–10

In the first match that Roma played in the Europa League (Thursday 30 July, 2009), Mexes scored a pass by Totti, which gave a draw to Roma. It is not sure whether Mexes or Totti scored, but when Totti took the free-kick, Mexes touched the ball which resulted in a goal.
