Pierce Davies Schenck was an entrepreneur in the metalworking business in Dayton, Ohio. He used the garage behind his house at 414 Oakwood Avenue to work cars on 1907 and established the Speedwell Motor Car Company, located where the old Delco factory was later built in Edgemont. The business was destroyed by the Dayton flood, but Schenck became president of Dayton Malleable Iron Company and turned his focus to adapting high silicon iron alloy to practical uses. This led to his establishing the Duriron Company, a name which he coined, in 1917. It prospered with high demand from war and employed 1,500 men, becoming one of Dayton’s leading industries. His home was designed by Dayton architect Albert Pretzinger in 1927.
