Pierre de Boissieu, born 1945,[1] is a French diplomat and former French ambassador to the European Union (EU). He has been the Secretary-General of the Council since 1 December 2009, suceeding Javier Solana (perviously he was Deputy Secretary General)[2]

The Secretary-General is a key figure in the organization and running of the Council of the European Union. De Boissieu was appointed for two years until the summer of 2011, said French President Nicolas Sarkozy.[3] According to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, de Boissieu will manage the Council General-Secretariat for another 1,5 years.[4] Concerning Merkel's EU advisor Uwe Corsepius who was reported previously by German media as de Boissieu's rival candidate, German government sources were quoted as saying that due to the duration of de Boissieu's term, nobody would be out of the race.[5]
