The pieve of Piona.

The pieve is an Italian language term defining (especially in the Middle Ages) rural churches with a baptistery, upon which other churches without baptisteries depended.

The term derives from the Latin plebs, which, after the expansion of Christianism in Italy, defined the community of baptized people. Most of the modern pievi appeared in the 5th century, as Christianism expanded in the rural areas outside the main cities; in the 9th-10th centuries they also received bell towers
