The Education Portal

Books are the bricks and mortar of education
Education encompasses teaching and learning specific skills, and also something less tangible but more profound: the imparting of knowledge, good judgement and wisdom. Education has as one of its fundamental goals the imparting of culture from generation to generation (see socialization). Education is 'to draw out'. This means facilitating realisation of self-potential and latent talents of an individual.

The education of an individual human begins at birth and continues throughout life. Some believe that education begins even before birth, as evidenced by some parents' playing music or reading to the baby in the womb in the hope it will influence the child's development. For some, the struggles and triumphs of daily life provide far more instruction than does formal schooling (thus Mark Twain's admonition to "never let school interfere with your education"). Family members may have a profound educational effect — often more profound than they realize — though family teaching may function very informally; but formality only proves the education outside the family that is also being taught.

Physics education refers both to the methods currently used to teach physics and to an area of pedagogical research that looks to improve those methods. Historically, physics has been taught at the high school and college level primarily by the lecture method together with laboratory exercises aimed at verifying concepts taught in the lectures.

In most introductory physics courses mechanics usually is the first area of physics that is discussed. Newton's laws of motion, which describe how massive objects respond to forces, are central to the study of mechanics.

The primary goal of physics education research is to develop pedagogical techniques and strategies that will help students learn physics more effectively. A variety of interactive learning methods (sometimes also called active learning methods) and laboratory experiences have been developed with this aim.

Seymour Papert (born March 1, 1928 Pretoria, South Africa) is an MIT mathematician, computer scientist, and prominent educator. He is one of the pioneers of artificial intelligence, as well as an inventor of the Logo programming language (1968), a tool to improve the way that children think about and solve problems.

Pappert developed an interesting and original vision on learning called Constructionism, built upon the work of Jean Piaget (Constructivism). It rethinks how schools should work based on these theories of learning. It also focuses on the impact of new technologies on learning in general and schools as learning organisations in particular.

From Wikiversity

The Education Portal

Welcome to the Education Portal. Many Wikiversity participants are interested in education in general and how learning takes place at Wikiversity, in particular. This page is meant to be a user-friendly guide to education-related Wikiversity content. You may also be interested in the Wikiversity School of Education and help for School and university projects.

In November 2005 the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees rejected the first Wikiversity project proposal and instructed the Wikiversity community to modify the proposal to "exclude online-courses". The Board requested that the Wikiversity community "clarify [the] concept of e-learning" that will guide Wikiversity. The modified Wikiversity project proposal that was approved by the Board calls for two major components of Wikiversity: learning materials and learning activities.

  • Composing free and open online educational resources - The course reading and the assignments will familiarize the participants with the main concepts related to open education resources and to the historical and philosophical ideas behind them. The participants will also carry out hands-on exercises and will this way learn to create and participate in projects producing free and open educational resources.

Selected research

Using wikis as tools for learning is a new and evolving social practice. If Wikiversity is to succeed, we need to learn how to make the best use of wikis for learning. This project aims to be an exemplar of how a wiki can be used for learning and to refine, develop and expand on the social practice of using wikis for learning. See Learning to learn a wiki way.

The original Wikiversity model for online learning

Learning online.

"Learning by doing" is a slogan that captures the intent of the Wikiversity "e-learning model". The Wikiversity e-learning model was developed in response to a request by the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees and it was included in the approved Wikiversity project proposal.

At Wikiversity a general term that we can use for educational content is "learning resource". So far, learning resources have been roughly divided into learning projects and learning materials.

It is the goal of some Wikiversity participants to create a vast collection of static learning materials, many of which could be downloaded and used by conventional bricks-and-mortar schools, or by self-study students. This is still a major goal of Wikiversity - to provide a repository of learning resources, with lesson plans on how they could be used, and feedback from students and teachers about how we would evaluate these resources in fulfilling their needs.

However, in terms of developing a Wikiversity model for learning, what Wikiversity needs now is a collection of exciting learning projects that will attract wiki participants. If we can engage Wikipedia participants in projects that they are interested in, then the learning materials will accumulate as a by-product of those projects. Here is a familiar example of how participation in a wiki project leads to the production of learning materials.....read more.....
