The Engineering Portal

Gearbox

Engineering is the application of science, technology, mathematics, art, and practical experience to the design and production of objects, tools or processes. Professional practitioners of engineering are called engineers. Engineers design and build aircraft (Aerospace), roads and buildings (Civil / Structural), computers and electronics (Electrical), machines and vehicles (Mechanical), medical devices (Biomedical), enviromental systems (Environmental), agricultural equipment and processes (Agricultural), processing plants and fuels (Chemical), new materials (Materials) and much, much more. Without engineering, the world would be a very different place.

Bioreactors

Biochemical engineering is a branch of chemical engineering that mainly deals with the design and construction of unit processes that involve biological organisms or molecules. Biochemical engineering is often taught as a supplementary option to chemical engineering due to the similarities in both the background subject curriculum and problem-solving techniques used by both professions. Its applications are used in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and water treatment industries.

Engineering and Technology Portal

ISS Aug2005.jpg
The Engineering and Technology Portal serves to organize everything in the Engineering and Technology category.

This Portal will connect browsers to the learning materials that have been developed by the Wikiversity Engineering and Technology schools, departments and divisions. These schools, departments and divisions should be listed in the schools departments and divisions section. This portal should feature exciting examples of Engineering and Technology learning resources. Wikiversity participants interested in Engineering and Technology are invited to create and develop learning projects and learning resources and help to organize them.

Selected Biography

Thomas Young, English scientist
Thomas Young (*June 14, 1773 – †May 10, 1829) was an English scientist, researcher, physician and polymath. He is sometimes considered to be "the last person to know everything": that is, he was familiar with virtually all the contemporary Western academic knowledge at that point in history. Clearly this can never be verified, and other claimants to this title are Gottfried Leibniz, Leonardo da Vinci, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Francis Bacon, among others. Young also wrote about various subjects to contemporary editions of the Encyclopedia Britannica. His learning was so prodigious in scope and breadth that he was popularly known as "Phenomenon Young."

The Engineering Catalogue of Learning Resources

Pre-Engineering Curriculum

An education in Engineering is built upon a foundation of mathematics and sciences. Every engineering discipline shares these fundamental studies at its core and every engineering student should be proficient in them:

  • Mathematics
  1. Primary and Secondary Mathematics
  2. Calculus
  3. Linear Algebra
  4. Differential Equations
  • Physical Science
  1. Basic Biology (for some disciplines)
  2. Basic Chemistry
  3. Basic and Levels 1 & 2 Physics

The Engineering Curriculum

The education of an engineering student must encompass the studies prescribed by the chosen discipline of study, yet will additionally require study of topics related to all disciplines and required in nearly every engineering field:

  • General Engineering
  1. Introduction to Technical Writing
  2. Introduction to Computer Science
  3. Computer Aided Design

Things you can do...

  • Add learning materials for the School of Engineering
  • Build courses based on available learning materials on Wikiversity
  • Add courses based on the classes that you are currently teaching/taking. Add a page on the contents of each day of class at the end of the day. You will learn the material better and help us all learn.
  • Create audio files, like Blues basics for use as background music in cisLunarFreighter
  • Create Foley Effects like Rocket Engines at liftoff and thrusters when manuevering cisLunarFreighter
  • A design study is needed (Lunar Boom Town) to support business planning for a LOX Plant at Lunar Boom Town.
