Dr. Prannoy L Roy (Bengali: প্রনয রায), born on October 15, 1949, is an Indian media figure. His father is a Bengali and his mother is Irish/English. He is the founder and the Executive Chairperson of New Delhi Television (NDTV). He is one of the pioneers of Indian television journalism.

Early life

Prannoy Roy spent first few years of his life at Kolkata & studied in La Martiniere Calcutta. Roy attended The Doon School, Dehradun and went to Haileybury (UK) for his A-levels. He graduated in Economics from the University of London's Queen Mary College in 1973. He received his Ph.D. (in agricultural economics) from the Delhi School of Economics, where he taught for a year.

He worked as a Chartered Accountant for some time and later worked with Price Waterhouse, India - later he worked as Economic Advisor, Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India - before moving to television.

Roy is a Director on the Board of NDTV Media Limited, NDTV News Limited , NDTV Imagine Limited, NDTV Lifestyle Limited, NDTV Convergence Limited, NDTV Labs Limited, NDTV Investments Private Limited, RRPR Holding Private Limited, Metronation Chennai Television Private Limited, Alliance Lumiere Limited and NGEN Media Services Private Limited. Dr. Prannoy Roy is a Member of the Shareholder's Investors Grievance Committee of the Board of Directors of the Company.

Roy is much known as a specialist in election analysis with Vinod Dua. The Roy-Dua team has covered every election since 1984 in the world's largest democracy. Roy is considered as a liberal & supporter of market economy in the media.His political beliefs are close to that of the Congress party. During an interview with Dr Alexander Mathai of the State Minorities Commission of Maharashtra, Roy questioned Mathai as to whether he was in the 21st century due to his belief in the Bible's condemnation of homosexuality as a sin. Roy further questioned Christianity's tolerance in the same interview.

Personal life

Roy is married to Radhika Roy (sister of Brinda Karat), who was a speech therapist and is presently the Director of NDTV. He is the cousin of the prize winning Indian writer Arundhati Roy[1] .Dr Roy's father and Arundhati's father are brothers.

He is also a member of International Advisory Board a neo conservative globalist think tank council on foreign relations.[2][3]
