Progressive Jazz is a type of music that formed from inclusion of elements from other musical genres. One such result was the creation of Jazz fusion. It was primarily developed on the west coast of the United States in the late 40's and early 50's.[1]

Creation

In the late 1950s Stan Kenton began to alter what was the standard in Jazz at the time. He used his charts differently by layering his music. This created a seemingly counterpoint type effect both melodically and rhythmically[2].
