Prostitution in Suriname is illegal, but the laws are rarely enforced.^[1]

Recently, concerns about human trafficking have resulted in police raids on brothels. Poverty continues to put young women at risk of becoming exploited for commercial sex.

The presence of large groups of illegal workers in the gold mining sector in the interior of the country drew young Maroon women and girls into commercial sexual exploitation.
