From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A protected state held a similar status to that of a protectorate as part of the British Empire, except that it usually had a functioning system of internal self-government. Britain was responsible only for defence and foreign affairs. A perfect example within its ex-colonial territory is the Azad Jammu and Kashmir, now a Autonomous state, formerly a Princely state of the British Raj, is now protected by the Pakistani Federal government since 1972. At a time, Tonga was also a Protected State, in order to obtain British protection for the second king, who Europeans and Tongans alike were attempting to oust.
