Psychonauts is a platform video game created by Tim Schafer, developed by Double Fine Productions and published by Majesco. The game was released on April 19, 2005 for the Xbox, April 26 for Microsoft Windows and the following June for PlayStation 2. It has also been released on Steam, as an "Xbox Original" through Xbox Live Marketplace, and through GameTap. On November 5, 2009, Psychonauts also became available through the online distribution service Good Old Games through their partnership with Majesco.

Psychonauts is based on the exploits of Raz, a young boy gifted with psychic abilities who runs away from the circus to try to sneak into a summer camp for those with similar powers in order to become a 'Psychonaut'. He finds that there is a sinister plot occurring at the camp that only he can stop from happening. The game is centered on the widely strange and imaginative minds of various characters that Raz enters as a Psychonaut-in-training in order to help them overcome their fears or memories of their past, so as to gain their help and progress in the game. Raz gains use of several psychic abilities during the game that are used for both attacking foes and solving puzzles.

While the game suffered from poor sales and publisher Majesco suffered financial difficulties relating to Psychonauts and other titles in its catalogue, Psychonauts overall received strong critical praise and is still considered to be one of the best platform games of all time.

Contents

Gameplay

Psychonauts combines traditional console platformer elements with the kind of strong storytelling, humor and dialogue found in adventure games. The camp itself is fully explorable by the player to find hidden arrowheads that can be used to purchase items at the camp store and psi cards that help to improve Raz's Psi Ranking, to talk to other campers and camp advisers, and to make way to the various "levels" within the game. There are also areas in the "real world" of the camp, including a nearby insane asylum, that the player will explore during the course of the game. Throughout these areas are characters whose minds Raz can enter, either through their own actions, or by use of a small door that Raz uses on the character's forehead. Each of these character levels has its own unique visual design and set of challenges, related to the demons, nightmares and secret memories of the mind that Raz is exploring; for example, within the mind of the lungfish that terrorizes the camp lake, Raz is seen as a giant monster attacking a city filled with lungfish beings (in a level designed to parody most elements of the kaijū genre), while within the mind of Boyd, the insane security guard at the asylum, Raz finds a town, twisted and askew, with cameras and eyes hidden everywhere, which tune in with Boyd's paranoia. Within the mind levels, the player can collect various "figments of imagination" which can also lead to increasing Raz's Psi Ranking, locate tags to match with various "emotional baggage" within the level to advance ranks and unlock concept art and destroy "mental vaults" to unlock a slideshow that helps to explain the background of that character and his or her mental problem. The player must also avoid taking damage from censors that attempt to remove Raz from the character's mind. Each mind level typically ends with a boss fight that represents the main cause of the character's mental problems.

Raz gains new psychic powers through the game through either instruction by the camp counselors, or by increasing his Psi Ranking. These powers include telekinesis, levitation, invisibility, pyrokinesis, clairvoyance, Psi Shield, Psi Blast and confusion. Additional Rankings increase the range, duration or potency of these abilities. These powers are directly involved in the puzzle-solving aspects of the game as well as to defeat foes within the game, and allow the player to tailor the solutions to his or her own playing strengths. The player also gains items that can be used either for solving puzzles, to escape from a mind level if they become stuck, or to get advice for solving some of the puzzles. Raz can also communicate with an older member of the Psychonauts for hints. However, due to a curse placed upon his family, he is unable to touch water and will die if he comes into contact with it too much.

Plot

Setting

The story is set in Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, a remote US government training facility under the guise of a children's summer camp. The area was hit centuries ago by a meteor made of psitanium (a fictional element that can grant psychic powers or strengthen existing powers), creating a huge crater. The psitanium affected the local wildlife, giving them limited psychic powers, such as bears with the ability to attack with telekinetic claws and cougars with pyrokinesis. The Native Americans of the area called psitanium "whispering rock", which they used to build arrowheads. When settlers began inhabiting the region, the psychoactive properties of the meteor slowly drove them insane. An asylum was built to house the afflicted, but within fifteen years the asylum had more residents than the town did. The government relocated the remaining inhabitants and flooded the crater to prevent further settlement, creating what is now Lake Oblongata. The asylum still stands but has fallen into disrepair.

The government took advantage of the psitanium deposit to set up a training camp for Psychonauts, a group of agents gifted with psychic abilities and used to help defeat evil-doers. The training ground is disguised as a summer camp for young children, but in reality helps the children to hone their abilities and to train them to be Psychonauts themselves. Due to this, only those recruited by the Psychonauts are allowed into the camp.

The protagonist and playable character of the game is Razputin "Raz" Aquato, the son of a family of circus performers, who runs away from the circus to become a Psychonaut, despite his father's wishes. His family is cursed to die in water, and a large hand attempts to submerge Raz whenever he approaches any water. When at camp, Raz meets four of the Psychonauts that run the camp: the cool and calculating Sasha Nein, the fun-loving Milla Vodello, the regimental Agent/Coach Morceau Oleander, and the aged Ford Cruller, said by Raz to have been the greatest leader the Psychonauts ever had, until a past psychic duel shattered Ford's psyche and left him with numerous quirky personalities and no memory of his real self (which explains why he's seen throughout the camp as a cook, ranger, admiral, etc.). Only when he's near the large concentration of Psitanium does his psyche come together enough to form his real personality. During his time at camp, Raz meets several of the other gifted children including Lili Zanotto, the daughter of the Grand Head of the Psychonauts, with whom he falls in love; and Dogen Boole, a boy who goes around with a tin foil hat to prevent his abilities from causing anyone's head from exploding. Raz also meets ex-residents of the insane asylum including ex-dentist Dr. Loboto, as well as Fred Bonaparte, an asylum inmate with dissociative identity disorder, also known as a split personality, and Linda the gigantic lungfish that transports him from the camp's shore to the asylum.

Story

Raz (short for Razputin) is the main character of Psychonauts

Raz, fleeing from the circus, tries to sneak into Whispering Rock but is caught by the Psychonauts agents. Though they contact his parents so that they may recover Raz, they allow Raz to stay at camp though not allowing him to participate in the camp activities.[1] However, they recognize that Raz has strong psychic abilities. After Coach Oleander allows Raz to participate in "Basic Braining", Sasha, impressed by his performance, invites Raz to test how strong his abilities are.[2] While exploring his own mind, Raz comes across a vision of Dr. Loboto attempting to pull Dogen's brain from his head, claiming it to be a "bad tooth", but Raz is unable to overcome a mental barrier to see more.[3] When Raz returns to the real world, he finds that Dogen's brain has gone missing;[4] the Agents pass it off as part of Dogen's personality. Raz is able to overcome the mental barrier in his mind to learn that Dr. Loboto is working with Coach Oleander to extract the brains of the children and put them in psychic-powered tanks. Raz learns that Sasha and Milla have gone away from camp on official business, Coach Oleander is nowhere to be found, and learns that Lili has been chosen as the next victim, taken to the insane asylum for the process. Raz consults with Ford, who is unable to leave the camp but gives Raz a piece of bacon which he can use to contact Ford at any time.

Raz crosses the lake, and encounters the few remaining residents of the insane asylum. After Raz helps to resolve their mental issues, the residents help Raz to reach Dr. Loboto's laboratory at the top of the asylum. He finds that Oleander and Doctor Loboto have taken Lili, Sasha, and Milla hostage. Raz is able to free them, where they turn to fight Oleander and Loboto. As they fight, the insane asylum is burned down, and while the others escape safely, Oleander transfers his mind to one of the death tanks and attacks Raz. Raz defeats the tank, but upon his success, super sneezing powder is ejected from the tank, a last resort of Oleander's. The powder causes Raz to sneeze his brain out. Raz, without much choice, moves his brain into the tank, where his psyche merges with Oleander's.

Raz finds himself in a mental world ("The Meat Circus") that combines his own fears of the circus with Oleander's childhood fears of his father, a butcher. Raz escorts "Little Oly", the child version of Oleander, safely through the world, and is able to defeat the gruesome visions of both of their fathers successfully. However, as their minds are still melded together, the two visions combine into an overall amalgam of the two that Raz is unable to defeat. Suddenly, Raz's real father shows up in the mental world, and explains to Raz that he too had psychic abilities, and did not mean to dissuade Raz from exploring them further. Together, the two are able to defeat the amalgam, and pull Raz' and Oleander's brains apart, restoring them to their proper bodies. As the rest of the children's brains are restored, Raz is congratulated for his outstanding work, and is allowed to become a Psychonaut by both the agents and his father. As he is leaving camp, news arrives that the Grand Head of the Psychonauts has been kidnapped. Raz and his fellow Psychonauts fly off to rescue him.

Development

The back-story for Psychonauts was originally conceived during the development of Full Throttle, where Tim Schafer envisioned a sequence where the protagonist Ben Throttle goes under a peyote-induced psychedelic experience. While this was eventually ejected from the original game (for not being family friendly enough), Schafer kept the idea and eventually developed it into Psychonauts.[5]

Schafer's team was partly made up of several people he worked with on Grim Fandango at LucasArts. The art design crew included background artist Peter Chan and cartoonist Scott Campbell. Voice actor Richard Steven Horvitz, best known for his portrayal of Zim in the cult favorite animated series Invader Zim, provides the voice of Raz, the game's protagonist. Raz was originally conceived as an ostrich suffering from mental imbalance and multiple personalities. Tim Schafer killed the idea because he strongly believes in games being "wish fulfillments," guessing that not many people fantasize about being an insane ostrich.[6]

Originally, Psychonauts was to be published by Microsoft for release exclusively on their Xbox console, but in March 2004, Microsoft pulled out of this deal. It emerged in August 2004 that Double Fine had negotiated a new publishing deal with Majesco to release the game on Windows as well as the Xbox. Tim Schafer was quoted as saying "Together we are going to make what could conservatively be called the greatest game of all time ever, and I think that's awesome."[7] In October 2004, it was revealed that Psychonauts would be released on yet another platform, the PlayStation 2, ported by Budcat Creations. The final US release date for the game on Xbox and Windows was April 19, 2005, with the PlayStation 2 port following on June 21, 2005. Psychonauts was re-released via Valve Corporation's Steam content delivery system on October 11, 2006.[8] It is also available on GameTap.

Although initially unplayable on the Xbox 360, Tim Schafer spearheaded a successful e-mail campaign by fans which led to Psychonauts being added to the Xbox 360 backwards compatible list on December 12, 2006,[9] and on December 4, 2007, Microsoft made Psychonauts one of the initial launch titles made available for direct download on the Xbox 360 through their Xbox Originals program, although the game can not be played using the VGA HD cable.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was composed by Peter McConnell, famous for his other works associated with LucasArts, such as Grim Fandango. A soundtrack featuring all the music was released in 2005.[10]

Psychonauts received positive reviews, with many reviewers citing its characters and sense of humour as particular good points. The game was criticised for long loading times when switching between areas of the game.[citation needed]

Sales

Despite the game's critical success, its sales were lackluster.[26] Although the game was cited as the primary contributing factor to a strong quarter immediately following the game's release,[27] a month later Majesco revised their fiscal year projections from a net profit of $18 million to a net loss of $18 million,[28] and at the same time its CEO, Carl Yankowski, announced his immediate resignation.[29] By the end of the year, the title had shipped fewer than 100,000 copies, and Majesco announced its plans to withdraw from the "big budget console game marketplace".[30] However, this figure predated the game's European release, its release on Steam, and its inclusion on the Xbox 360's backward-compatible list.

According to Schafer, as of June 14, 2007 Psychonauts had sold 400,000 copies (not counting digital distribution, or the Double Fine company store). Psychonauts is now officially 'out of print'.[31] —On June 14, 2007, GameTap added Psychonauts to its subscription service game library, and, for a limited time, offered it as a free download.[32] It is also available for purchase from Steam, Valve Corporation's direct-download service,[33] as well as GOG.com.[34] On December 4, 2007, the game was among the first games to be added to the Xbox Live Marketplace for the Xbox Originals download service on the Xbox 360. The game continues to sell well through digital distribution; during a week in January 2010 where the game was discounted to $2 on Steam, it was the 8th highest selling product based on total revenue that week.[35]

Sequel

Although Tim Schafer has repeatedly expressed interest in working on the Psychonauts franchise again in the future, as of September 2009, no game is in development.[36]

Elka: I saw Nils peeking into a hole in the girls' cabin.
Dogen: I'm hiding!

Elka: I mean, he'd see my new boyfriend, James, staring back. And he'd be furious at Nils.

Sasha Nein: These tests are unauthorized, so I can't actually ask you to come. However, if you were to just drop in, well, then what could I do? Let me give you this. [Sasha floats a button over to Raz] Remember: your talents set you apart, Razputin. Sometimes isolation can be a good thing. It can lead to... important discoveries.
Razputin: Wait! I don't even know where your lab is! Is this some kind of test?
[Agent Nein's disembodied voice reverberates inside of Raz's head]

Dogen: [talking to squirrels] No! I could never do that! I could never... kill everyone.

Sasha: [Activating the Brain Tumbler] Now relax. This won't hurt at all. Unless something really very bad happens.

Lili: I traced the psychic interference back to Coach Oleander's radio! He's been broadcasting his insane plot all over camp in his sleep!
Raz: So he really IS stealing children's brains to make weapons!
Lili: Yes! Isn't that great!
Raz: What?? How's that great?
Lili: Because this is an honest-to-goodness psychic emergency!
Raz: Yeah! And Sasha's not here. He left on some official Psychonauts business.
Lili: Milla left a note saying the same thing!
Raz: Lili! A deranged madman is building a fleet of psycho-death tanks to take over the world, and there's no one who can stop him, except for you and me!
Lili: OH MY GOD! Let's make out!
Raz: (backs away) Uh, what?
Lili: Sorry! I'm just so excited! Since you showed up, Raz, things are so much more exciting! Sinister death plots, mad scientists, hideous monsters...
Raz: ...Make out?

Crystal: [after spending the entire game being overly-cheerful] O-M-G. I feel so bad for throwing myself off the roof now!
Raz: Why'd you do that?
Crystal: Because the poison didn't work!

Raz: [on reinserting the camper's brains after recovering them) Isn't that dangerous?
Agent Cruller: Oh, nothing is dangerous if you have the right tools! [holds up a funnel] Messy, but not dangerous!

Basic Braining

Razputin: So this is it... the mental world.
[Pause]
Elton: It looks like a dentist's office.
Razputin: A mental dentist's office!

[Raz and Bobby are overlooking an obstacle]
Bobby Zilch: We can't get past this! This is stupid!
Razputin: Hmm, looks like a test. There's probably a secret, more advanced route.
Bobby Zilch: What's that supposed to mean? You think you're more advanced than me, New Kid?
Razputin: Sorry, what?
Bobby Zilch: I'm not stupid. You're stupid. The Coach is stupid. This whole camp is stupid! That thing flying at you is stupid!
Razputin: [turning around] What thing?! Whoa!
[Bobby kicks Raz off the ledge.]

Brain Tumbler Experiment

Sasha Nein: Razputin, can you hear me?
Raz: Sasha? Where am I?
Sasha Nein: You're inside your own mind, but I'm not sure where. Tell me. What do you see?
Raz: I see...a rundown gypsy caravan.
Sasha Nein: Do you recognize it?
Raz: [shrugs despondently] Yes. It's where I was born.

Razputin: [to the censors] You are my own creation! I command you to stop!...Dang. Does that ever work?

Raz: I see a small, bunny-like animal thing.

[Raz spots a monster of some sort]
Razputin: Uh, Sasha?

Razputin: No, this is more of a super-scary, flaming-eyed demon type of deal.

Razputin: [After looking through the memory entitled "The world shall taste my eggs!"] Okay, what the hell was that? I'm seeing some crazy stuff in here, Sasha. This can't be right.
Sasha Nein: Ach. Why did I buy the the CHEAP Brain Tumbler?

Dr. Loboto: Now the problem originates here, in the area that we in the medical profession like to refer to as THE BRAIN!

Dr. Loboto: I hate to be so blunt, but YOU have the insanity... of a manatee!
Dogen: I know, people are always saying that. What do you think's wrong with my brain, doctor?
Dr. Loboto: How should I know? I'm a dentist. But here's what I do know: if the tooth is bad, we pull it!

Dr. Loboto: Now hold still, this will only hurt until your brains come flying out!

[Dogen sneezes his brain out]
Dr. Loboto: Oh, good boy! There's that pesky brain. Here's a tissue. Now don't you feel better my dear lad?
Dogen: [Now brainless] TV..?

Razputin: You have the brain of a little girl?
Kochamara: ...I said, "in my LAB!"
Razputin: I think you have the muscles of a little girl, too!

Resistance Fish: Hey Goggalor!
Raz: What? Are you talking to me?
Resistance Fish: AHHHHHHHH!!!! My ears!!!
Raz: [whispering a little] I'm sorry--
Resistance Lungfish: AHHHH!!!! Oh My GOD!! AHHHHH!!! [then he dies]

Dr. Loboto: A little turtle soup?
Sheegor: Please, Dr. Loboto! No!

[A psychic battle ensues, and suddenly, Ford appears wearing psitanium on his back.]
Ford: You know something, Mory, we've got a word for people like you in the Psychonauts who turn on their own.
Oleander: Ha! I don't need the Psychonauts anymore, old man. I'm gonna rule the world with my fleet of brain-powered death tanks! You got a word for that?

Edgar: It should be impossible, and yet somehow they go on... playing the game.
Edgar: In the end, Razputin, aren't we all just dogs playing poker?

Crispin: Whatever.

Fred: The battle can't be won! We're gonna lose it!
Crispin: I'm afraid you lost it years ago, Fred. Now, pipe down over there. I am the orderly, and I run a quiet, peaceful insane asylum.

Crispin: One moment. You're not Dr. Loboto. My eyes may be half gone, but I would recognize the mad doctor anywhere. He has a stone-cold face a man doesn't easily forget. He wears a beastly smock covered in thick straps like an electric chair. And in the place where his hand should be there's nothing but a gleaming metal claw. So unless I'm mistaken, you are not Dr. Loboto, you do not pay my salary, so kindly step away from my elevator and die. Thank you, sir.

Raz: Hey, good thinking, Fred. That sure would save me a lot of work.
Fred: Yep! Right after I take a nap.
Raz: Yes! A- wait, nap?
Fred: War is hell, Razputin, and I'm sleepy. [yawns] I'll take care of Crispin for ya, just as soon as I... [falls asleep]
Raz: Oh, man...

[After you assemble your Doctor Loboto disguise]
Crispin: Taking her up yourself today, eh, Doctor? Less work for me.
Fred: Inmate Whytehead.
Crispin: Chief Orderly Bonaparte! You're... you're...
Fred: Armed?

[After you free Lili]
Edgar: Well, it's official. the genius is back. Time to go get ready for my gallery show. [pulls his chain out of the floor, breaking a gas main] Uh-oh, this looks bad. [sniffs] Ah, well, that's good. Someone must have turned off the gas long ago.
Gloria: [outside in the garden] Oh, here's what my poor flowers need - a little water. [turns the gas back on]
Edgar: Oh, no, I spilled all my turpentine and acetone!
Fred: [climbs out of a window and sees Boyd poised to throw a milk bottle into the asylum] Hey, Boyd! Long time no see!
Edgar: Oh, Mister Orderly! I did not see you there. I was just taking a little therapeutic walk in the moonlight-
Fred: Relax, the asylum's closed. We can all go home.
Gloria: Leave? Here?
Fred: Yeah, this place is for crazy people. And I don't know about you, but I ain't crazy no more! [eye twitches]
Edgar: I have to tell you, I'm feeling pretty good...
Gloria: You know, maybe it is time for us all to move on.
Fred: What d'ya think, Boyd? You ready to blow this popsicle stand?
Boyd: [hurls the milk bottle into the asylum, where it explodes] The milkman has completed his route. You guys wanna split a cab?

Lili: [after kissing Raz] Wow...
Raz: [looks past her, sees the asylum blow up] Wow...

Sasha: Razputin, you have surprised us yet again. I cannot thank you enough.
Raz: Hey, hey. All in a day's work for a Psychonaut.
Sasha: Ha. Well, Psi-Cadet, you mean.
Lili: Are you kidding? The Psychonauts should be so lucky to have somebody like Raz! The brain he's got in there---
Oleander: ---is one in a million!

Gloria's Theater

Becky: Well, I'm off to kill myself.

Bonita: What? Can't you see I'm drowning in my own misery here? Should I be doing something with my hands?

Raz: You're mean and fat!
Jasper: And...?
Raz: Just giving you the update.

Becky: [If you try to firestart her] Hot flash! Hot flash!

Raz: If you hate the show so much, why don't you just leave?
Jasper: I just can't take my eyes off it! It's like watching the scene of a horrible car accident... an accident where the victims can't act, and the paramedics forget their lines!

[Raz has chased the Phantom through the catwalks. He is now jumping around the theater])
Raz: OK, Mr. Phantom. It's time to see who you...really...are?
[The Phantom returns to Jasper's box and removes his mask, somehow gaining a great deal of weight in the process. Raz realizes that Jasper is, in fact, the Phantom!]
Raz: I so totally guessed that!
Actress: Uh-uh! You thought it was Becky!
Raz:Shhhh! [Goes over to Jasper] All right, Jasper! I know you're the one who's been causing all of the problems around here.
Jasper: WHAT? How dare you accuse me of being the rugged and romantic Phantom, who has captivated audiences for months on end?
Raz: Hmmm...yeah, you're probably right. He's so agile and limber and thin. He could never be you.
[Pause. Jasper blinks in shock.]
Jasper: Why, you little...OF COURSE IT'S ME!
Raz: Well, time to hang up the cape, Tubs, because your days of terrorizing this theater are over!
Jasper: Maybe as the Phantom...but he's nothing compared to the full, destructive force of an angry critic!
[His chair flies into the air, becoming a floating weapon]
Raz: Now, how can I say this and still sound cool...uh...'sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me?'

Waterloo World

Soldier: Mon dieu! I hate bridges! Zat was for killing my fathaire! Bridge!
Fred: Hey, quit killing my bridges! You're making me mad!

Carpenter: Oh, man, I would love to go over there, but that soldier would kick my ass... and I don't get paid for that.

Carpenter: Go away, burglar!
Raz: I'm not a burglar!
Carpenter: Yes you are! I can hear your feet on my roof. Why don't you go down through the chimney? I've got a nice, hot fire roaring just for you.
Raz: If I was on the roof, how could I be talking to you down here?
Carpenter: Maybe you're a ventriloquist!

Soldier: None shall pass!

Raz: Fred, your soldiers think you don't care about them. They think you wouldn't care if they lived or died.
Fred: What? I care about them?
Raz: Well, they don't believe it.
Fred: What do they want? A letter on my official stationary saying that I'd be sad if they died?
Raz: Yep.
Fred: Oh...okay.

Peasant: Wow...he really does care! I'd be honored to die for my leader now.
Raz: Wait, you're not necessarily gonna die...
Peasant: Oh, come on. Fred's a great leader and all, but he's still Fred.

Raz: Hey, check out this cool coin I found.
Peasant: Whoo, money! [To Wife] Honey, I'm off to die for an incompetent leader who won't even remember my name! You're in my will.
Raz: Oh, come on! Again with the dying?
Peasant: I just hope she doesn't go and spend it all on scrap-book supplies. Part of the reason I'm so ready to die...

Razputin: [talking to Napolean's first soldier] I can burn wood with my mind.
Soldier: That would be cheating.

Fred Bonaparte: [After being hit] Ow! Oh, go ahead, beat me up. I don't care.
Napolean Bonaparte: Trust me, he doesn't.

Black Velvetopia

Razputin: [in the sewers, which oddly resemble a gym shower] I'm starting to feel like I'm back in high school! Which is weird, because I'm only ten.

Razputin: [after beating Tiger] Sleep tight, kitty.

Razputin: [after defeating Dragon] Soon they'll be 'dragon' your ass outta here! (giggles) Hey, are you awake? Did you hear that??

Eagle: Ca-Caw.
Razputin: That's it? Ca- [Eagle punches him in the face] -OOF!
Eagle: Ca-Caw.

Lampita: [crying over Dingo, then looks at Edgar] Um, I always... loved you more...?

[You can see this if, after you receive the confusion grenade from Dingo, you lob one at the dog waiting downstairs.]
Painter Bulldog: ...Oh, my, GOD. GOD. Is DOG....spelled backwards.
Raz: Um...are you okay?
Painter Bulldog No, wait! God...is CAT...spelled backwards. Ooooh no. Oh, nononono, no!

Painter Bulldog: [begins to slather paint slowly over his stomach] I'm shaaaavinnng, just like daaaaddeeee...

The Meat Circus

Oly: No, bunny, don't go in there! That's a bad place! THAT'S A BAD PLACE FOR BUNNIES!

Razputin: (looking over the Meat Circus) My childhood memories were bad enough! This is just gross.

Raz's fake father: What's going on here? What have you done to our circus?!
Raz: Dad!
Raz's fake father: Polluted...perverted...this looks like the work of...mentalists.
Raz: I can explain!
Raz's fake father: Have you been associating with Psychics?
Raz: Dad, I--
Raz's fake father: Psychics. Fortune tellers! They killed your grandfather...they cursed our entire family to die in water!
Raz: I know, but-
Raz's fake father: Including you, Razputin! And me! But I'm going to live. You know why? Because I'm still an acrobat! Let's see if you are...

(Jumps to the top of the tent)

Raz's fake father: What's it going to be, son? Die in the water, or show me what you got?

Raz's father: ... And I have more hair than that!

Butcher and Little Oly: Don't run or daddy's gonna' kill ya!

Little Oly: Ahh!! My face!!!!

Raz's father: Razputin...[breaks through Raz's mental wall] Razputin! I see your skull is as hard to penetrate as ever.
Raz: Dad!
Raz's father: What is your brain doing out here in this tank, with this other brain? Who are all those unconscious people? What have you gotten yourself involved with?
Raz's fake father: Psychics! He's been cavorting with filthy, cheating psychics!
Raz's father: Is that really...is that really how I look in your mind?
Raz's fake father: Man, do I hate psychics! And seeing my son happy!
Raz's father: I don't hate psychics! I used my psychic connection with you to find you. And to project myself into your mind.
Raz: But how can you hate me for being psychic if you're psychic, too?
Raz's father:: Son. I could never hate you. I only wanted you to be happy, Razputin. And safe. Our family has many enemies.

Razputin: Oly, are you okay? Where's your dad?
Oly: He's over there, talking to your dad...
Raz's fake father: He did WHAT?!
Razputin: Uh-oh.
Raz's fake father: Somebody's gonna get grounded...
Oly's father: Make that 'ground'!

About Psychonauts

  • I'm just going to list out of context some of the things that occur in Psychonauts: A telekinetic bear, a dentist who harvests brains, a sequence wherein you become a giant Godzilla-style monster and terrorize a society of talking fish, and shadowy, trenchcoated government agents who disguise themselves as housewives by brandishing rolling pins and talking disjointedly about pies. Psychonauts is a platform video game created by Tim Schafer, developed by Double Fine Productions and published by Majesco. The game was released on April 19, 2005 for the Xbox, April 26 for Windows and the following June for PlayStation 2. It has also been released on Steam, as an "Xbox Original" through Xbox Live Marketplace, and as a free playable title on the GameTap basic subscription service.

While the game suffered from poor sales and publisher Majesco suffered financial difficulties relating to Psychonauts and other titles in its catalogue, Psychonauts received strong critic praise and is widely considered to be one of the best platform games.

Psychonauts is based on the exploits of Raz, a young boy gifted with psychic abilities who runs away from the circus to try to sneak into a summer camp for those with similar powers in order to become a "Psychonaut". He finds that there is a sinister plot occurring at the camp that only he can stop from happening. The game is centered on the widely strange and imaginative minds of various characters that Raz enters as a Psychonaut-in-training in order to help them overcome their fears or memories of their past, so as to gain their help and progress in the game. Raz gains use of several psychic abilities during the game that are used for both attacking foes and solving puzzles.

Psychonauts is a platforming/adventure game made by newly created development house Double Fine Productions. The game was the brain child of Tim Schafer. Who was also part of the staff of several LucasArts games such as Grim Fandango and Full Throttle.

Psychonauts stars Razputin, a young acrobat from a Circus. After discovering that he has the ability to use his mind in ways that most people can't, he runs off to the Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp on the World's Tiniest Pony.
