Puttur (Telugu: పుత్తూరు), is a census town and mandal headquarters in Chittoor district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

Puttur is situated on the way from Tirupati to Chennai. It is recently added in the TUDA region.

Demographics

As of 2009, Puttur has a population of approx 80,000. Puttur has an average literacy rate of 85%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 73%. In Puttur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. Telugu its mother language of Puttur people.

The world famous Natural Bone Setting Hospital is located here. From ancient days, broken bones are set by herbal leaves without operation, as it is one of the oldest procedure which gained popularity by the people all over the world. Though called puttur bone setters, this hospital is actually located in Rachapalem, a village near puttur. A family of kshatriyas discovered this unique procedure, and their descendants are still responsible for the management of this hospital.

The first Railway Track in Andhra Pradesh was built between Puttur and Renigunta.

While laying the railway track, Tamil workers called this place "PUDHU OORU" which means "NEW PLACE". In due course of time, this name was changed to "PUTTURU" by the Telugu people in and around this place.Climatic conditions is very good and there is no pollution.People like to interest live in N.G.O's colony, SBI colony, Lakshmi Nagar Colony.

Festivals in Puttur

The local festival called "Thirunallu" is celebrated in the month of August every year for 3 days. The whole town of Puttur will wear a festive look during the festival. "Theru lagedi" is most important part of Thirunallu. The huge car will be decorated with flowers and will carry a statue of a god through Puttur. It is taken across the important streets of Puttur. Also, a small exhibition and shandy will take place on those days, entertaining the people. In the shandy, people will be seen buying small toys, decorating items, cosmetics, and home appliances. There are also rides and food selling there. It's much like a carnival. It is located by the Puttur bus stand. One of the cool things selling at the "Thirunallu" are tiny little colored baby chickens. They come in varied colors such as pink, green, orange, yellow, or blue.
