qi peng (as he prefers to write his name; born October 7, 1976 in Queens, New York) is an Asian American contemporary artist who focuses on conceptual art and performance art in addition to paintings, works on paper, and conceptual photography. He received his bachelors degree at Vanderbilt University in 1997 and his masters degree at Yale University in 2001. His varied artwork, ranging from installation art to works on paper, deals with Institutional Critique and the contemporary art world in his pieces. He lives in Salt Lake City and works currently in both Salt Lake City and New York City.
Within his pieces, he interviews various art professionals (such as artists and gallery owners) as a form of collaborative portraits in order to study the relationships among people in the contemporary art world. peng also uses primary/secondary documents such as rejection/acceptance letters or faux art magazine advertisements and postcards to examine the workings of the contemporary art market in relation to graphic design as well as marketing practices as an art form. His work is influenced by artists such as Richard Prince, Sherrie Levine, Merlin Carpenter, Maurizio Cattelan, Dan Colen, Christopher Wool, Anselm Reyle, Hans Haacke, Jenny Holzer, John Baldessari, Wade Guyton, Tom Sachs (artist), On Kawara, Mark Lombardi, Mel Bochner, Art & Language, and Sophie Calle in that he blurs the lines between fiction and reality within his personal and professional life as well as the deconstruction of traditional relationships among people within a subculture.
Some of his new projects involve the creation of "art world" baseball cards, a few of which were presented through the Wikipedia Art Remix project curated by Scott Kildall and Nathaniel Stern, for Internet Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale.
He has exhibited in various places including Central Booking in Brooklyn NY, Dam, Stuhltrager Gallery in Brooklyn NY, the Padiglione Internet at the 2009 Venice Biennale in Venice Italy, Envoy gallery in New York City NY, 3rd Ward in Brooklyn NY, Projects Gallery in Philadelphia PA, The Laboratory of Art and Ideas at Belmar in Denver CO, modern8 Gallery in Salt Lake City UT, Claire Oliver Gallery/NURTUREart in New York City NY, James Cohan Gallery/NURTUREart in New York City NY, Metro Pictures Gallery/Visual AIDS in New York City NY, Art Raw Gallery, founded by Lemya el Sophia, in New York City NY, and Anna Kustera Gallery in New York City NY among other venues.
