Plot summary

This large mural traces the fate of John, the narrator, in France (especially the city of Nice), Europe, Mexico, Mauritius ...These sucessive trips inspire the author to write a book on two centuries of history of France, inspiration coming from the Revolution,or in another example the inspiration is the colonization of Mauritius and another inspiration is from a shipment to Mexico. The story of a very rough experience directly related to the war in Algeria is (in particular) the novel's most poignantly personal note from J.M.G. Le Clézio
