Roger Jon Ellory is a British thriller writer. He was born in June 1965 in Birmingham.

Life and work

RJ Ellory is married and lives in the West Midlands with his wife and son.

His first novel, Candlemoth, was published in 2003 and was shortlisted for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award in the same year. Ghostheart was published in 2004 and A Quiet Vendetta was published in 2005.

In August 2006, Ellory's fourth novel was released, entitled City of Lies, and in the early part of 2007 it was shortlisted for the CWA Steel Dagger for Best Thriller.

Ellory's fifth novel A Quiet Belief In Angels was released on 22 August 2007. Hailed as an epic accomplishment, it garnered the following quote from fellow crime fiction author Michael Connelly:"A Quiet Belief In Angels is a beautiful and haunting book. This is a tour-de-force from RJ Ellory."

A Quiet Belief In Angels was selected as one of the titles in the Richard & Judy Bookclub 2008. This was officially announced on 27 December 2007, and Ellory's book was reviewed on the Channel 4 Richard & Judy Show on 30 January 2008. The addtional advertising and promotion associated with the Richard & Judy shortlist introduced Ellory's work to a far wider audience.

Exceeding all expectations, A Quiet Belief In Angels has sold in excess of 300,000 copies since its release, and has also been purchased for translation into a total of nineteen languages including French, Japanese, Norwegian, Lithuanian and Brazilian. It was ranked third in the Sunday Times bestselling book list in the week of its review on TV. It was shortlisted for the Barry Award for Best British Crime Fiction 2008, the 7th Prix Du Polar Europeen Du Point 2008, Le Nouvel Observateur Crime Writing Prize 2008 and the Quebec Booksellers' Prize 2008.

It was also selected for the final shortlist for the Inaugural Prix Du Roman Noir Du Nouvel Observateur 2009. alongside Dennis Lehane, Don Winslow, Carl Hiaasen and James Lee Burke. On 31 Marc 2009, RJ Ellory won the award for the French publication of A Quiet Belief In Angels, entitled Seul Le Silence. Ellory's sixth book was released in October 2008, entitled A Simple Act of Violence, and his seventh book, The Anniversary Man is due for release on September 3, 2009. He is currently in discussion with a number of film production companies regarding a film version of A Quiet Belief In Angels, the screenplay of which will be penned by Ellory.

UPDATE - May 3, 2009. The film rights to the book A Quiet Belief In Angels were bought by Olivier Dahan and Legende Films at the end of April 2009. Ellory has been contracted to write the screenplay. Olivier Dahan (Oscar-winning director of La Vie En Rose) has just completed his first English-speaking film, entitled My Own Love Song which stars Renee Zelwegger, Nick Nolte and Forest Whittaker. The film has also been scored by Bob Dylan. Dahan is now working on a musical based on the life of Mozart, and once this project is complete he intends to undertake the screen adaptation of A Quiet Belief In Angels.

UPDATE - May 3, 2009 Ellory's first American release is due for September 2009. He will be publishing A Quiet Belief In Angels with Overlook Press. Additionally A Quiet Belief In Angels has been released in Holland and Brazil, and there are a further seventeen overseas releases due in the next nine to twelve months. Seul Le Silence (the French translation of A Quiet Belief In Angels) rose to Number 23 in the Nouvel Observateur-published bestseller list last week.

UPDATE - October 25, 2009 Ellory releases 'A Quiet Vendetta' in France (titled 'Vendetta'), and begins a tour through Belgium and France to include Brussels, Lille, Strasbourg, Nantes, Limoges, Bordeaux, Montpellier and Paris. He also releases 'The Anniversary Man' in the United Kingdom, and 'A Quiet Belief In Angels' in the USA. In October he will be undertaking a twelve-city US Tour to include The Southern Festival of Books in Nashville, and events in Washington, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, Florida and the Bouchercon Festival in Indianapolis amongst others. 'A Quiet Belief In Angels' has been released in Norway, Japan, Brazil, Portugal and Italy, and is scheduled to be released in an additional twelve languages over the next nine months. His sixth UK release - 'A Simple Act of Violence' - has been shortlisted for the American Barry Award for Best British Crime Fiction 2009, and 'Seul Le Silence' (the French version of 'A Quiet Belief In Angels') has been shortlisted for the 813 Trophy.
