The story is said to be a modern interpretation of the epic Ramayana.
During the early stages, Vikram expressed his long desire to work in a film with Mani Ratnam. Later on in 2008, during Vikram's completion of his long-awaited film Kanthasamy, there were several reports claiming he was to be Ratnam's next star for being cast. Vikram was eventually signed up to portray the male lead character of Raavana while Abhishek Bachchan was to take over the same role in Raavan. Vikram will also be playing a supporting role in Raavan. Aishwarya Rai will play the lead role in both versions of the film.
Initially it was expected that Kamal Haasan would play a guest role in the film, but after rejecting the offer, it was reported that R. Madhavan would portray that role, who claimed he was busy in Hollywood. Vishal Krishna, Prabhu Ganesan and Prakash Raj were also reported to have approached for the role, as was Krishna Sekhar for another role.
Ranjitha, who was casted to play an supporting role in the film had eloped during the film's last shooting stages because of the recent controversy that broke out about her and Paramahamsa Nithyananda; as a result, she was unreachable. Rathnam later decided to reshoot all of her portions with a different actress, which meant a heavy wage in the film's budget. The audio release was scheduled on March 2010[21]but since the release date of the film has changed, audio will release only on April or May. Rahman, who is currently having busy schedules of his Jaiho Concert-World Tour, is working on Raavan as well and close sources say that Rahman is yet to complete a signature song for the different versions and background score as well.
