.Race and ethnicity in the United States Census, as defined by the United States Census Bureau and the Federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB), are self-identification data items in which residents choose the race or races with which they most closely identify, and indicate whether or not they are of Hispanic or Latino origin (ethnicity).^ Census 2000 adheres to the Federal standards for collecting and presenting data on race and Hispanic origin as established by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in October 1997.

Snapshot: Race in the US Census
The 7th federal census, in 1850, asked for "Color"[6] and gave the choices:
  • White
  • Black
  • Mulatto
The 10th federal census, in 1880, asked for "Color"[7] and gave the choices:
  • White
  • Black
  • Mulatto
  • Chinese
  • Indian
The 22nd federal census, in 2000, had a "short form"[8] that asked one ethnic and one race/ancestry question (questions 1-6 not reproduced here, questions 7 and 8 paraphrased):
.7. Is the person Spanish/Hispanic/Latino?^ Even so, I notice the media lumps all people who speak Portuguese or Spanish into one group: Hispanics or Latinos, which is just ridiculous.

^ Latino—which in Spanish means "Latin" but which as an English word is probably a shortening of the Spanish word latinoamericano—refers more exclusively to persons or communities of Latin American origin.

^ The inclusion of Spain was explicit in the 1990 census, but not so in the 2000 census and the American Community Survey definitions, although the term "Spanish", formerly used for the Hispanic or Latino group ("Persons of Spanish Origin", "Persons of Spanish Surname", etc) was retained, in "Spanish/Hispanic/Latino".

8. What is the person's race?
  • White
  • Black, African Am., or Negro
  • American Indian or Alaska Native (write in tribe)
  • Asian Indian
  • Chinese
  • Filipino
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Vietnamese
  • Native Hawaiian
  • Guamanian or Chamorro
  • Samoan
  • Other Asian (write in race)
  • Other Pacific Islander (write in race)
  • Other race (write in race)
.This census acknowledged that "race categories include both racial and national-origin groups."^ That may include adding the sentence: "For this census, Hispanic origins are not races."

Snapshot: Race in the US Census
The 7th federal census, in 1850, asked for Color[6] and gave the choices:
  • white
  • black
  • mulatto
The 10th federal census, in 1880, asked for Color[7] and gave the choices:
  • white
  • black
  • mulatto
  • Chinese
  • Indian
The 22nd federal census, in 2000, had a "short form"[8] that asked one ethnic and one race/ancestry question:
.1. Is the person Spanish/Hispanic/Latino?^ Even so, I notice the media lumps all people who speak Portuguese or Spanish into one group: Hispanics or Latinos, which is just ridiculous.
