Rachel Elizabeth Dare is a fictional character in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians stories. Unlike other prominent members of the series, neither of her parents are gods; instead, they both are mortal. Despite this, Rachel has the ability to see through Mist, a substance which renders most mortals unaware of the existence of the Olympians as well as the immortal world's interactions with humanity's. She possesses a power of extraordinary foresight uncommon in even her demigod counterparts. Her clairvoyant abilities and ultimately her own self-awarness of fate leads her to allow the spirit of the Oracle of Delphi to pass into her from the cursed remains of the previous oracle, thus becoming the next Oracle of Apollo, Oracle of the Gods as well as the resident oracle at Camp Half-Blood. By doing such, she sacrifices her romance with Percy, as the Oracle must severe all romantic connections in her oath to become the Oracle.

Rachel originally appeared at the Hoover Dam in The Titan's Curse. Percy was being chased by Skeletons when she sneezed. Percy whirled around when his sword, Riptide, went right through her body. Then he realizes she knew it was a sword, and she can see through the Mist. She saves Percy Jackson from a squad of Skeletons who are about to attack him by sending him into a restroom behind her and sending the skeletons to the generators.[1]
In The Battle of the Labyrinth, more of her background is revealed. She unexpectedly shows up at Percy's new school, Goode High School. She is able to see that two cheerleaders are really "empousai" (empuses) and is able to help Percy escape from Kelli, one of the empousai. Later, Percy asks her for help in navigating Daedalus's Labyrinth in order to locate Daedalus. She sets off with Percy and Annabeth through the maze. The demigods are worried someone will miss her, but she explains that no one would care if she were gone and leaves it at that. After finding that Daedalus has struck a bargain with Kronos, she escapes with Percy and Annabeth. Eventually, the trio find Kronos's headquarters. Kronos has, however, inhabited Luke's body and attempts to chase Percy down. Rachel appears with Annabeth and Nico and throws her blue plastic hairbrush at Luke's eye, which momentarily confuses Kronos. She also mysteriously manages to convince a limousine driver to ditch his client and take her and the others around to look for an entrance into the Labyrinth. She also assists in finding the lost god, Pan, and is present during his death. Later, she parts ways with Percy, Annabeth, Nico, Grover, and Tyson, but not before revealing that her father is a wealthy businessman who buys up undeveloped forest and uses it to build shopping malls. Pan's death affected her, mainly because of her father's job. She expresses interest in hanging out with Percy again, much to Annabeth's dismay. Percy promises to call her and mentions that he has memorized her number, much to Rachel's delight. Later, during his birthday party, Percy thinks of inviting her over, but is too afraid to do so.
Rachel grows more and more fond of Percy as a good friend throughout The Battle of the Labyrinth, just as Annabeth grows very jealous of her. Rachel sees that Percy and Annabeth seem to have a lot more feelings for each other than they will admit. She can also see that Annabeth is jealous of her hanging out with Percy and tries to give him the hint that Annabeth likes him, too, but Percy doesn't seem to get it. It is, however, made clear that Percy does have some feelings towards Annabeth.[2]
The Last Olympian begins with Percy driving her to the beach in Paul Blofis's Toyota Prius. She invites him to stay with her and her parents on a vacation in St. Thomas; he does not think it will work out. She also asks Percy to kiss her, but they are interrupted by a Pegasus, turning out to be Blackjack, landing on the car with Charles Beckendorf atop him. Percy goes to sink the Princess Andromeda, and Rachel kisses him good luck before he leaves. In Percy's dreams, he sees that Rachel is writing things in Ancient Greek, and drawing pictures of things she has never seen before, like a picture of Luke Castellan at age nine, and a battle raging near the Empire State Building. When she goes on vacation with her parents, she soon asks them to return to New York by making a deal with her father to go Clarion Academy. This was all because she felt that Percy was in danger. Later on, Rachel "dumps" Percy and steals Blackjack, using him to go to Camp Half-Blood where she becomes the new Oracle. She successfully takes in its spirit, for Hades has lifted the curse he had on it. She recites the next Great Prophecy and heads back to the mortal world for the school year, leaving the campers without their oracle until the next summer.[3]
Although Rachel's father is rich, she does not like the way she lives and instead prefers to spend time helping charity and pursuing her artistic interests.[1] She also acts for a time as a possible love interest for Percy, a fact which causes tension between her and Annabeth.[2][3]However, she later explains that she was attracted to Percy because he was the one who led her to her destiny as the oracle. As the oracle, she is not able to marry, date or bear children. She has respect for Annabeth and Percy's relationship.[3]
