From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Two ships of the environmentalist organization Greenpeace have borne the name Rainbow Warrior. The term itself comes from the book Warriors of the Rainbow by William Willoya and Vinson Brown.

  • Rainbow Warrior was a former trawler previously in use with the British Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food under the name Sir William Hardy since her launch in 1955. She became Greenpeace's first ship when acquired by them in 1978. She was sunk in 1985 by operatives of the French intelligence service (DGSE).
  • Rainbow Warrior is a motor assisted schooner, launched in 1957 as Grampian Fame and acquired by Greenpeace in 1989. She was renamed in honour of the previous ship, and is currently in service with the organisation.
