Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Paraguay may face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Both male and female same-sex sexual activity is legal in Paraguay, but same-sex couples and households headed by same-sex couples are not eligible for all of the same legal protections available to opposite-sex married couples.

Laws against homosexuality

Homosexual acts have been legal in Paraguay since 1880[2]. The age of consent in Paraguay is 16 for homosexuals, 14 for heterosexuals[3].

Recognition of same-sex relationships

There is no legal recognition of same-sex couples at all. Since 1992 the Constitution limits marriage and equivalent or similar unions to one man/woman[4]

Military status

GLBT people are not banned from serving in the Paraguay military.

Discrimination protections

There is no sexual orientation or gender identity provisions as a protected category in the Paraguay constitution.

Living conditions

Nevertheless, Paraguay still has a conservative and a very macho culture, and homosexuality continues to be viewed negatively. Moreover, institutional homophobia persists and the Roman Catholic Church holds a lot of power and influence in politics.
