redBus, also known as redBus.in, is an online travel agency offering bus tickets in India. It has offices in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune.


redBus' CEO, Phanindra Sama was recently selected by Endeavor as a high impact entrepreneur [1][2]. Also, Businessworld voted Phanindra Sama as one of the top 5 most promising entrepreneurs in India [3].

  • Home delivery of bus tickets: Customers who don't have any online payment mechanisms can order for home delivery and pay by cash.
  • Customer reviews: Now customers can read reviews about the bus service before their bookings
  • Language mini-sites: Since India is a multi-lingual country, redBus has translated its site into 5 regional languages
  • Mobile booking: Bus tickets can now be booked over SMS or using a mobile application too
  • Mobile payments: The site is one of the first few to have started accepting mobile payments

History

Tickets used to be booked through the traditional brick-and-mortar agents till 2006 when redBus introduced online bus ticketing [4] [5] [6]. India is the second most populated country in the World, but with one of the lowest bus penetration. As per this [1] report by Ashok Leyland, India has a very low penetration of buses as a percentage of population.
