Film career

It was an interview of director Shaji Kailas done for a film magazine that caused the entry of Renji to films. Shaji Kailas, who was also a beginner, asked Renji to write a script. The result was Dr. Pashupathy, a political satire, which turned into a super hit. The film came without any commercially viable stars and filled theaters for months in 1990.

He then wrote Akashakottayile Sulthan, directed by Jayaraj, with Sreenivasan in the main role. This was a disaster at the box office. He again joined with Shaji Kailas, this time to do a political thriller. Thalasthanam, was one of the biggest hits of the year 1992. This was a new light for the duo, which became famous as Shaji-Renji combination. The films from them are known for their punch hitting dialogues, high voltage scenes and action sequences. Renji Panicker is known for his unique way of narration, which was unsucessfuly copied by many. The attraction of the film is fire-packed dialogues that turns theatres to a festive mood. He is often criticized for his cliche themes and words, but critics are proved wrong every time when crowds are pulled into the movie halls.

After the success of Thalasthanam, came another block buster in the year 1993, Sthalathe Pradhana Payyans, which was a turning point in the life of Jagadish, who was known for his comic roles. Jagadish played the role of a common man who overnight becomes the home minister of the state. Sthalathe Pradhana Payyans was followed by two superhits,Ekalavyan and Mafia, both with Suresh Gopi as hero. Ekalavyan broke records, installing Suresh Gopi as the superstar of Malayalam cinema. This film was about the success story of an IPS officer who fought against a drug mafia led by a Swamiji. The movie celebrated 365 days in theaters. Mafia told the underworld story of Banglore city. Suresh Gopi played Ravi Shankar, who is looking to take revenge against the killers of his elder brother. Success of these movies made Renji the most expensive script writer in the Malaylam film industry ever.

In 1994, Shaji Kailas and Renji paniker brought out Commissioner, the all-time hit of Suresh Gopi. This film created a wave in theatres, boosting the image of the trio to new heights. The film also had a sequel BharatChandran IPS, later released in 2005. This was the directorial debut of Renji. Again Shaji and Renji joined in 1995, but this time, it was Mammootty. There was a lot of enthusiasm and expectation as they were casting an established star like Mammooty for the first time. The King, which was released in the end of 1995, was a megahit movie in terms of box office collections of that year. Mammootty played an IAS officer, who fought against a local MP, played by Murali. This was also Renji's last film with Shaji. Renji and Shaji parted after this for unknown reasons. Still even though they share a good rapport outside cinema, they never joined for film later.

Renji then joined with Joshi in 1997 for Lelam, with Suesh Gopi as the main hero. This film was also a big hit. Then again with Joshy came Pathram in 1998, which was another superhit. After the continuous truimph that lasted for seven years, Renji tasted failure with Dubai. This big budget film, completely shot in Middle East was a fiasco for Joshi, Renji and Mammootty.Dubai eventually turned out to be one of the biggest flops in Mammootty's carrer. Again with Joshi, Renji bought out Praja(2001), another big flop in his career. Praja was his first venture with Mohanlal, but was a fiasco. This made Renji take a break for three years. Industry people wrote him off.In 2005 , Renji hit back with Bharat Chandran IPS. This was sequel of Commissioner, released in 1994. Bharat Chandran was also the directorial debut of Renji Panicker. The movie was Produced by Renji himself. This film crossed 100 day run in all major centres, again bringing back the golden days of Suresh Gopi. Renji Panicker again directed Roudram(2008), with Mammootty in the main role. The film managed to be another hit.

Controversies

Renji Paniker was also in the spotlight for his controversial statements from time to time. He has been critical of the political establishments, which is clearly visible in his films. His films have caricatures of contemporary politicians and their misdeeds, and he indirectly pokes fun of them. He is also criticised for the language used in films. Many puritans have raised eyebrows for the usage of rude, rough terms, which are often treated abusively in Malayalam language. He also has triggered controversies by publicly opposing the ban on smoking in films and censorship of films.
