.Resident Evil is a 2002 science fiction horror film based on the same titled series of survival horror games developed by Capcom.^ Coincidentally, Capcom, which develops the Resident Evil series, also distributes Grand Theft Auto games in Japan.

^ This is a direct reference to the first game in the series Resident Evil.

^ Resident Evil gave birth to many of the best survival horror series.

.Borrowing elements from the video games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, the film follows an amnesiac heroine Alice, and a band of Umbrella Corporation commandos, as they attempt to escape a secret underground facility that at one time was filled with people but is now overrun with zombies.^ Resident Evil 4, the newest game was a new time for me.
  • Resident EvilWalkthrough - IGNFAQs 25 September 2009 15:11 UTC faqs.ign.com [Source type: General]

^ The movie uses elements of the plots of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Last Escape.

^ Also, Underground Trams are a recurring mode of transportation in the Resident Evil games.

.The film was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.^ The second movie based on a video game directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.

^ The project was dormant for over a year before Paul W.S. Anderson signed on to write and direct the movie.

.The film was commercially successful, grossing US$102,441,078 worldwide; however, it received many negative reviews from critics.^ The film was not screened for critics, most likely due to the overwhelmingly-negative reviews from critics for the first two films.

.Although Resident Evil received negative reviews, financially it has been successful enough to have several sequels made.^ Although resident evil 4 is by far the best game, the resident evil remake is also a good game.

^ I was worried that Capcom would completely abandon the old Resident Evil when they made these changes to the story, but after playing through it I am relieved at what they came out with.

.Resident Evil was followed by three sequels: Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) and Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010).^ The idea for the two Kukri knives were from Milla Jovovich's fight trainer from Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Ron Balicki.

^ The title was later changed to "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" after the release (and subsequent box-office failure) of Star Trek: Nemesis.

^ The production still of Alice (Milla Jovovich) holding two Kukri knives is a visual reference to Resident Evil: Apocalypse's Poster.

.Anderson continued his involvement in the series, writing and producing the sequels, however, leaving directing to Alexander Witt and Russell Mulcahy.^ Both director Russell Mulcahy and second unit director Douglas Aarniokoski have directed films in the 'Highlander' series.

.Resident Evil stars Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, and James Purefoy.^ The idea for the two Kukri knives were from Milla Jovovich's fight trainer from Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Ron Balicki.

^ "STARS" is the only word ever mentioned by the Nemesis, it's also the only word he ever mentions (repeatedly) in Resident Evil 3: Last Escape.

^ The title was later changed to "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" after the release (and subsequent box-office failure) of Star Trek: Nemesis.

Plot

.Inside The Hive, a top-secret genetic research facility owned by the Umbrella Corporation located deep beneath Raccoon City, a lab technician tosses away a blue vial in a lab, exits, and seals the room.^ BLUE (contd) This is a sealed room.

^ I was head of security at a secret high-tech facility called The Hive, a giant underground laboratory developing experimental viral weaponry.

^ Meanwhile, in an underground facility of the Umbrella Corporation, the evil Dr. Isaacs is researching an anti-virus to domesticate the zombies and cure people using clones of Alice.

.The vial breaks and the facility's security system, The Red Queen, detects possible infection, and in response, seals the Hive, killing everyone inside.^ TWELVE Why kill everyone in the Hive?

^ Sealed the Hive and tried to kill everyone within it.

^ The Red Queen, and artifical intelligence computer and surviellance system that controls The Hive killed everyone down in the facility after the T-Virus was detected.

.Elsewhere, Alice (Milla Jovovich) awakens in an empty mansion with amnesia.^ Milla Jovovich's character, Alice, never has her name spoken, written or identified until the end credits.

^ Alice's new costume was designed by Milla Jovovich's clothing line, Jovovich-Hawk.

^ The production still of Alice (Milla Jovovich) holding two Kukri knives is a visual reference to Resident Evil: Apocalypse's Poster.

.She and another person with amnesia, Matt (Eric Mabius), are seized by a group of commandos and taken to an underground train station which leads to The Hive.^ Near the end, when the underground tram pulls back to the Mansion station, the serial number on the front of the lead car reads "ALEXIA" followed by a string of digits.

^ Aside from archive footage from the first film featuring shots of Eric Mabius, the only person to return after the previous film is Milla Jovovich.

^ To prepare for their roles, the actors playing commandos and Milla Jovovich and Eric Mabius had a week of commando training (climbing, martial arts, weapons handling, etc.

.They are joined by Spence (James Purefoy), who is also suffering from amnesia.^ In the commentary it's mentioned that actor James Purefoy (Spence) used his own blue jeans instead of the costume prop.

^ Spence (James Purefoy) .

.The head of the commandos, “One”, explains that everyone in the group is an employee of the Umbrella Corporation.^ Also, one of the three founders of Umbrella Corporation in the game series is named Ozwell E. Spencer.

.It is also revealed that The Red Queen is responsible for releasing a nerve gas in the mansion which has caused their amnesia.^ Among one of thier commrads, Alice, her mission was to steal the virus for another female that she became in contact with, but a nerve gas was released in the mansion above The Hive, and she can't even remember her mission, nor her name...

When the train arrives, the group opens and enters The Hive.
.The group eventually finds their way to The Queen's chamber; however, as they attempt to disable her, four of the commandos, including One, are killed.^ They stop at a four way junction.

^ However, according to Red Queen's readings, they would have asphyxiated as the oxygen concentration fell rapidly, but it would have been slower and without the same symptoms.

^ The first team of COMMANDOS are just about to enter the Queens chamber when without warning, a thick blast door suddenly SLAMS down.

.The only commandos left alive are Rain (Michelle Rodriguez), Kaplan, and J.D. Alice and Kaplan then shut The Queen down, opening the doors of the facility, releasing the now zombified staff and other experiments into The Hive.^ The COMMANDOS force open the doors to the shaft.

^ ALICE wedges door shut.

^ Open the door on the right into the laboratory.

.During a battle between the group and some of the zombies, Rain becomes infected after receiving multiple bite wounds.^ WHAM! ANOTHER ZOMBIE appears suddenly behind Ridley, BITING out the muscle between his shoulder and neck.

.As the group moves throughout The Hive, Alice, Matt, and Spence slowly regain their memory.^ Continuity: In the lab, when Spence gets his memory back, Alice jumps about inconsistently between shots.

^ ALICE, MATT and SPENCE watch as thousands of letters and numbers scroll across the three plasma screens.

^ MATT is in the lead, followed by SPENCE and ALICE. J.D. then TWELVE bring up the rear.

.Later, Matt and Alice are separated and J.D. is killed while Kaplan, Rain, and Spence remain in near The Queen's chamber.^ ALICE And youre here to kill the Queen?

^ ALICE kneels by what remains of SPENCE'S body.

^ Pipes and plaster fall to the floor, followed by MATT and ALICE. SPENCE brings up the rear, propping up a near dead J.D. .

Still separated, Matt looks for information about his sister. .Meanwhile, Alice encounters several dogs which were experimented on and surprises herself when she uses martial arts to defend herself.^ Meanwhile, in an underground facility of the Umbrella Corporation, the evil Dr. Isaacs is researching an anti-virus to domesticate the zombies and cure people using clones of Alice.

.Matt eventually finds his sister, Lisa, who is now a zombie.^ Now push the closet and reveal a secret part and a zombie who thought he could evade the T-virus and kill him.

As she attacks him, Alice arrives in time to save him. .Matt remembers that he and Lisa unsuccessfully attempted to smuggle out a sample of the blue vial, the T-Virus, in the hopes of taking down Umbrella.^ Ohh, the blue herb is there for a reason, if your out of blue herbs grab this one if those pesky snakes poisoned you, then head down the lift.

^ We were going to smuggle out a sample of their new viral weapon.

Matt believes this to be the fault of Lisa's contact, who supposedly betrayed her. Alice, remembering she was Lisa's contact, remains silent.
.Soon, the survivors are once more united at The Queen's chamber and are forced to switch her back on to find an exit; The Red Queen agrees to help them.^ He switches off the Red Queen.

^ The Red Queen flickers back to life.

^ RED QUEEN (contd) ...the infection would have spread to cover the United States within 13 days.

.As Alice and the others try to escape through the maintenance tunnels, they are ambushed by zombies.^ Their only hope lies somewhere within Raccoon City--Dr Charles Ashford, one of the leading scientists for the Umbrella Corporation, will help Alice and the others escape the city safely--if they find his daughter.

^ If you come back into this room through the other door zombie dogs, or Cerberus will attack.

.Upon their arrival at the lab, they find that the vials containing the T-Virus and anti-virus are gone.^ In the scene at the beginning of the movie, where the vial containing the virus is dropped, the fumes escape into the building through an air duct.

^ Search the room for an herb, anti- virus, and ammunition as well as files containing important code numbers.

.He points a gun at the survivors then traps them in the lab.^ The three survivors pass the lab where we had first met GREEN, BROWN and BLUE. ALICE points ahead.

.He then heads toward the train, but before he can inject himself with the anti-virus, he is killed by a mutated creature called the Licker.^ Kill the creature and then head out soldier.

^ Curtis, having injected the G-virus, mutates.

^ In the movies and video games, the virus responsible for zombie mutations is called the T-virus.

.Back at the lab, The Queen offers to spare Alice and Matt if they kill Rain, who has been infected for the longest period of time.^ ALICE And youre here to kill the Queen?

^ Characters starting on B7F will obtain the chemicals first, use the chemicals to kill the infected plant so they can reach B6F and obtain the valve handle.

.Alice battles the Licker as Matt kills a now zombified Rain.^ The Russian version of the film differs slightly from the one released in U.S. There are a few extra shots of the train, and the scene with Alice and Matt after she kills his zombified sister is extended with a short line from Matt, where he explains that he is an internationally wanted criminal.

^ When Rain, Alice, and Matt are watching Spence's death on the monitor, you hear Matt say "What the fuck?"

^ During the church scene, when Alice fires at the motorcycle to kill one of the Lickers, the slow motion bullets have the Umbrella logo on the rear of the shells.

.Matt, after having been clawed by the Licker, opens a trap door on the bottom of the train, causing the Licker to be dragged along the track and burned to death.^ MATT opens the door.

^ AIKEN and SULLIVAN drag it over to prop the door open.

^ ALICE and MATT are trying to force the heavy steel blast door open.

.Matt and Alice arrive at the mansion, and escape at the last moment when the doors close.^ After Alice has been removed from the liquid filled chamber, and is fighting to escape the compound, her towel is tucked in/held closed in different shots.

^ When Matt and Alice return to the mansion at the end of the movie the case Alice is carrying is just a box covered in foil.

.Suddenly, Matt begins to mutate as the two are seized by Umbrella scientists.^ When we emerged, we were seized by Umbrella scientists.

^ When Matt's arm begins to mutate there are no digital effects until the very end.

The scientists announce that Matt is to be part of the "Nemesis Program". Alice attempts to fend them off, but is ultimately subdued. The other scientists are then heard voicing their intentions to reopen The Hive.
Later, Alice awakens at the Raccoon City Hospital, locked in an observation room. .After escaping the room and wandering the hospital's empty halls, Alice exits the building to find Raccoon City abandoned with signs of chaos everywhere.^ With the crates raised, you can now cross the top of the shelves to find the room's ventilation shaft exit.

Production

Pre-production

.In 1999, Sony and Capcom greenlit a Resident Evil film with George A. Romero signed on as the film's director and screenplay writer.^ Capcom created the Resident Evil series.

^ Coincidentally, Capcom, which develops the Resident Evil series, also distributes Grand Theft Auto games in Japan.

^ After the demise of both the fog and hook man versions of Resident Evil 4, Capcom went back to their roots.

.Romero's association with Capcom, the Resident Evil video game series creators, had extended from 1998 when Romero directed an ad campaign for Biohazard 2 (Resident Evil 2) in Japan.^ Although resident evil 4 is by far the best game, the resident evil remake is also a good game.

.Romero stated in an official appearance in Universal Studio's Talk City chatroom that he had his secretary play the entire game through and record the gameplay so he could study it as a resource.^ I reflected on my brother playing the through the game and I wanted to show him who is boss.
  • Resident EvilWalkthrough - IGNFAQs 25 September 2009 15:11 UTC faqs.ign.com [Source type: General]

.Romero's screenplay revolved around the plot of the Arklay incident and included characters from the Resident Evil video games.^ The sound in Resident Evil 4 is perfect for the game.

^ This is the only Resident Evil movie created by its video game creator, Capcom.

^ This Resident Evil used all new enemies that were not in any of the previous games.

.Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine were the lead characters, involved in a romantic relationship.^ She leads a convoy of survivors across the dead desert, but in the games, she on a mission to find her lost brother Chris Redfield.

^ George A. Romero's un-produced script features the game character Jill Valentine as the female lead.

^ Sadly, this walkthrough is for Jill Valentine, therefore Chris' campaign you'll have to look else where.

^ There are no zombies, no returning enemies, and only a few returning characters: Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, and Albert Wesker.

^ The closest to Wesker is BARRY BURTON, a muscular black man, as big as a grizzly, with the heart of a Teddy.
  • Resident Evil - by George A. Romero 16 January 2010 10:26 UTC www.dailyscript.com [Source type: Original source]

.The ending to the film would have been similar to that of the Resident Evil video game.^ This is the only Resident Evil movie created by its video game creator, Capcom.

^ The sound in Resident Evil 4 is perfect for the game.

^ Tricell is more known in the next Resident Evil game, Resident Evil 5.

[2] However, Romero's script was disapproved of and production was placed into development hell.[3] .Capcom producer Yoshiki Okamoto explained to the editors of Electronic Gaming Monthly that "Romero's script wasn't good, so Romero was fired".[4] In February 2000, Romero revealed in an interview with DGA magazine that, "I don't think they were into the spirit of the video game and wanted to make it more of a war movie, something heavier than I thought it should be.^ This is the only Resident Evil movie created by its video game creator, Capcom.

^ Nick des Barres, a 23 year old aspiring actor and ex-video game magazine designer, won the competition.

^ In the movies and video games, the virus responsible for zombie mutations is called the T-virus.

.So I think they just never liked my script."^ MATT (contd) Just like they know about the genetically modified meat in your burgers, the D.N.A. enhanced corn in your taco shells.

^ If for some reason, an unknown third party is involved, I don't think they'd let a chance like this slip by.

[5] .As Romero's script was a close, but not full, adaptation of the game, Capcom believed fans would feel that the movie had been altered too much from the game, and that newcomers would dislike the premise.^ When fans of Resident Evil found out that the game would be coming to the PlayStation 2, they were somewhat disappointed with the scaled down graphics that had to be incorporated.

^ George A. Romero's un-produced script features the game character Jill Valentine as the female lead.

^ This is the only Resident Evil movie created by its video game creator, Capcom.

[5]
Hired by Sony, Paul W.S. Anderson wrote a screenplay, which was ultimately favored over Romero's.[5] .In late 2000, Anderson was announced as director and writer, and Resident Evil re-entered pre-production stages.^ The earliest version of the game was announced for the PlayStation 2 under Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya.

^ The rest of the controls are pretty easy to muster, especially if you're a veteran of the Resident Evil series.

^ Resident Evil 4 was in production for many years due to the constant changes it went through.

[6] Anderson stated the film would not include any tie-in's with the video game series as "under-performing movie tie-ins are too common and Resident Evil, of all games, deserved a good celluloid representation".[7]

Casting

.In early 2001, Michelle Rodriguez,[8] James Purefoy[9] and Milla Jovovich[10] were the first of the cast to be signed on the project.^ Aside from archive footage from the first film featuring shots of Eric Mabius, the only person to return after the previous film is Milla Jovovich.

^ During the commentary on the first film in the series, Resident Evil, Milla Jovovich refers to her nipple appearing on screen, saying that this proves her dedication to the film.

.David Boreanaz was intended to portray the male cop lead of Matt Addison; however, he turned down the role to continue work on the WB series Angel.^ David Boreanaz was originally going to play Matt Addison but turned down the part to work on his TV series "Angel" (1999).

[11] .Boreanaz suggested that he was in negotiations to have a smaller role in the film claiming "Resident Evil is still there, a possibility, So, yeah, I'll see what happens",[11] however, he later declined the role.^ Considering the involvement of both Saddler and Krauser, the possibility of unforeseen problems is there, but I need him in the supporting role for me to achieve my goals.

^ The same thing happens at the end of Resident Evil (AKA: Bio Hazard) 2.

.The role of Matt Addison was then given to Eric Mabius who was later cast in March 2001,[11] along with Heike Makatsch, who was cast as Matt Addison's sister Lisa Addison, an employee working for Umbrella's Hive facility.^ MATT Some kind of Umbrella facility.

^ To prepare for their roles, the actors playing commandos and Milla Jovovich and Eric Mabius had a week of commando training (climbing, martial arts, weapons handling, etc.

^ A nuclear missile was fired at the city and the city, along with the t virus, was destroyed, along with Umbrella, who admitted to the incident.

[12]

Production and story development

In early March 2001, it was announced that half of the film would be shot in Adlershof Studios in Berlin and its surroundings.[13] .On 5 March 2001 shooting began principal photography at numerous locations including the then unfinished station U-Bahnhof Bundestag of the Berlin U-Bahn, Landsberger Allee, Kaserne Krampnitz and the Schloss Linstedt.^ Much of it was filmed in unfinished Berlin underground stations.

[14] Locations included The Spencer Mansion and The Hive. .The film's ending in Raccoon City was shot in Toronto, Canada.^ There is a shot near the end of the film of Alice's eye close up.

^ The shot at the end of the movie where we see the nuke flying above a pack of wandering zombies in Raccoon City is taken directly from the ending from the third Resident Evil game, Resident Evil 3: Last Escape (aka: "Resident Evil 3: Nemesis").

^ The next shot shows citizens of Raccoon City jogging, walking, and riding bikes wearing long pants - the paper boy has a flannel shirt over his t-shirt as he rides.

[15] Filming concluded and post-production on the film began on 19 May 2001.[16]
.The film's score and soundtrack were composed by Clint Mansell,[17] Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson[18] during mid 2001. Manson described the score and soundtrack as being more "electronic" than any of his other previous work.^ Director Anderson hired composers Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson because he wanted an edgy score, similar to those that appeared in John Carpenter's early films.

^ The newest member, Roger, seems to know more than the others and the team leader, Claus, has got a bad feeling about this mission.

^ One was more detailed than the other and was capable of many movements (the jaw and lips could part open, the tongue could extend).

[19]
.The film was originally subtitled as "Resident Evil: Ground Zero"[13][20] when the movie was considered a prequel to the games, however the subtitle was removed in due to the 9/11 attacks.^ This is the only Resident Evil movie created by its video game creator, Capcom.

^ This film was originally titled "Resident Evil: Ground Zero," but the title was changed to just "Resident Evil" after the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the USA. The final fate of the Matt character is known to fans of the games as Nemesis.

^ Tricell is more known in the next Resident Evil game, Resident Evil 5.

[21] .The film's first plot as of 16 March 2001 revealed that Jovovich's character Alice and Rodriguez's character Rain were the leaders of a commando team sent in to prevent a viral outbreak from spreading to the rest of the world,[12] however those details were later changed.^ ALICE gets to her feet and approaches the team leader.

^ However, unlike the sympathetic film character, the Ashfords of the games were villains.

^ The first sequence showing Alice waking up in the hospital through to her cocking a shotgun outside, consists entirely of footage shot for the first film.

.Anderson initially toyed with the idea of the film being an allegory to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, but the idea was not followed through.^ Connections to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: - Main character's name is Alice.

^ The first sequence showing Alice waking up in the hospital through to her cocking a shotgun outside, consists entirely of footage shot for the first film.

^ When Alice walks through the dunes, just before the crow's attack, the cameraman filming her is visible in her glasses.

[14] Despite that, the movie contains various references to the work.[22] .The obvious being the main character's name, another is the use of a white rabbit for testing the T-Virus.^ A white rabbit was use to test the T-virus.

^ Connections to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: - Main character's name is Alice.

^ The reward for beating Mercenaries with a 5 star rating on every level with each character is the ridiculously powerful Handcannon, which can be used in the main game.

.The wall that opens to the train station appears as a mirror (Through the Looking-Glass), the Red Queen and her behavior, wanting to behead/kill people, are references to the book; the Red Queen's first kill is actually a beheading.^ RED QUEEN I presume you are referring to the retro animated weapons systems.

^ Note that if you are helping Bob, leave him here (kill off any zombies first) while you move through the ventilation shaft.

^ A glass walled control booth looks out onto a long stainless steel corridor.

.In addition to relating to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the Red Queen's character was added into the film's story as a homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey an allusion to HAL 9000.^ Connections to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: - Main character's name is Alice.

^ In the Red Queen chamber, One's character is clearly only a few feet from the door.

^ ALICE, J.D. and MATT listen as the Red Queen casually fills them in on their executioner.

.During production, professional dancers were hired to star as zombies as they had better control of their body movements.^ Professional dancers were cast as zombies.

[21] .While computer effects were used on some zombies, much of the undead appearances were accomplished through make-up while their movements were a more laissez-faire approach, as Anderson told the actors to move however they thought a zombie would, given their conditions.^ Salazar would never do such a thing unless he was in some way being used unknowingly.

^ Announcing sweeping changes such as there would no more Umbrella Corporation, nor would there be zombies.

^ I don'texpect Luis would trust a stranger but if by chance they did cooperate, the situation could get a bit more complicated.

[21] .Whilst filming, there was a shortage of manpower where the available dancers were not enough to represent the required numbers of undead, however some of Capcom's executives and several of the film producers including Jeremy Bolt agreed to make appearances.^ Producer Jeremy Bolt's sister Anna learned to scuba dive in order to portray the drowned research scientist who revives underwater.

^ Producer Jeremy Bolt shaved his hair to play one of the zombies.

^ Cameo: Jeremy Bolt - The producer appears as a zombie several times throughout the movie.

[21] .The film's stunt coordinator also made an appearance as the dog trainer while Bolt's girlfriend and sister both appeared as zombies.^ The zombie guard who attacks Alice after the appearance of the first dog zombie is the film's stunt coordinator and trainer, Jaymes Butler.

Marketing and release

.In March 2001, the official website was set up, which revealed the films original 26 October 2001 release[23] and a redirect to the film's distributor Constantin Films.^ The film was released by German video distributor Highlight in both an extended form (longer than the uncut theatrical version) and in an edited version (with a "Not under 16" rating).

[24] The website was fully opened in July 2001, and composed of images, plot info, character biographies and downloads.[25] The film was planned to have a R-rated classification, however was overruled by Anderson, claiming he wanted a PG-13 rating as it would best suit a younger audience.[26] In January 2002, the film was officially announced to contain a R rating.[27]
In May 2001, it was announced that Sony Pictures Entertainment would distribute the film in North America.[28] .It was suggested by Capcom executives, that the film wouldn't be released in 2001, but rather in 2002[29] which was later confirmed by Sony in August 2001.[30] The film was set for release on 5 April 2002 before being pushed forward to a 15 March release.^ March 15, 2002 .

[31]
.In December 2001, Sony gave fans a chance to design the film's poster with a prize of an undisclosed amount of cash, a free screening of the film, and with the final design being the film's poster.^ The studio had hoped at one time to make the film PG-13, but the director insisted that to be true to the game, the film must be rated R. In December 2001, Sony gave fans a chance to design the film's poster with the prize being an undisclosed amount of cash, a free screening of the film and the chosen design being used on all the advertising material.

^ This film was originally titled "Resident Evil: Ground Zero," but the title was changed to just "Resident Evil" after the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the USA. The final fate of the Matt character is known to fans of the games as Nemesis.

[33] The film's trailer and clips were released in late January[34] and early February 2002.[35]

Critical reaction and box office

.The film opened in 2,528 theaters and was commercially successful, grossing US$17,707,106 on its opening weekend (15 March-17 2002).^ Opened with a $17.7 million dollar opening weekend.

^ March 15, 2002 .

^ When this film debuted, it had the largest opening weekend for a European-financed film.

The film gained US$40,119,709 domestically and US$102,441,078 worldwide.[1] .Resident Evil received many negative reactions from the critics and received a 34% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 110 reviews.^ After witnessing the reaction of the public and general planning had taken place, this version of Resident Evil 4 was also cancelled.

^ In many ways, this is the trump card for Resident Evil 4.

^ Resident Evil 4 shocked many fans of the series due to it's intuitive and simplistic new method of control.

[36] Robert K. Elder from the Chicago Tribune stated that the film "updates the zombie genre with an anti-corporate message while still scaring its audience and providing heart-pounding action",[36] however, Owen Gleiberman from Entertainment Weekly noted that the film is as "impersonal in its relentlessness as the videogame series that inspired it."[36]
Both Resident Evil and the sequel appear on Roger Ebert's most hated films list, published in 2005.[37] In the review of Resident Evil, Ebert describes the film as a zombie movie set in the 21st century where "large metallic objects make crashing noises just by being looked at." He also explains that the film's "characters have no small talk. Their dialogue consists of commands, explanations, [and] exclamations."[38]
.After commercial success at the box office, a sequel, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, was released in 2004. In 2007, the third film Resident Evil: Extinction was released.^ As in Resident Evil Zero, this game also does not make use of the item box system.

^ The idea for the two Kukri knives were from Milla Jovovich's fight trainer from Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Ron Balicki.

^ Was originally entitled "Resident Evil: Nemesis" after the third game in the "Resident Evil" (aka "Biohazard") videogame series, of the same name, which had a similar plot.

Anderson did not direct the films due to commitments to Alien vs. Predator[39] and Death Race[40] but instead functioned as the scriptwriter and producer on both. .The sequels were directed by Alexander Witt and Russell Mulcahy respectively.^ Both director Russell Mulcahy and second unit director Douglas Aarniokoski have directed films in the 'Highlander' series.

Anderson did, however, return to direct the 4th film in the franchise.

Relationship to the games

.Various elements are borrowed from numerous video games including Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis,[21] where Alice's character awakes in Raccoon City Hospital with a viral outbreak occurring in the city.^ Six years have passed since the viral outbreak in Raccoon City.

^ This is the only Resident Evil movie created by its video game creator, Capcom.

^ The sound in Resident Evil 4 is perfect for the game.

.There are several references to characters and organizations such as the Umbrella Corporation, the Nemesis program, the underground train bearing the moniker "Alexi-5000" a reference to Resident Evil Code: Veronica's villain Alexia Ashford (the train is from Resident Evil 2, but in the game it reads "Galaxie-5000" instead of "Alexi-5000") and a police cruiser, from which Alice takes out a shotgun, has a "S.T.A.R.S." logo on the hood.^ However, unlike the sympathetic film character, the Ashfords of the games were villains.

^ The character of Dr. Ashford is named after the Ashford family of the Resident Evil game series.

^ It bears the logo of the UMBRELLA CORPORATION. .

[21] .Jason Isaacs appears in the film as an uncredited masked surgeon (which is a reference to William Birkin).^ Jason Isaacs was set to play Doctor Birkin but left the project.

^ According to the writer/producer commentary, Paul W.S. Anderson mentions that the character of Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen) is a homage to actor Jason Isaacs, who made an uncredited cameo as Dr. Birkin and the film's narrator during the opening credits of the first film.

^ The opening voiceover is from Paul W.S. Anderson's friend, Jason Isaacs, who has appeared in some shape or form in virtually all of his movies.

The character of Dr. Isaacs (played by Iain Glen) in the film's sequels is dedicated to or based on him.[21]
.Other references to the first game include Alice examining the mansion by going outside; crows are visible for a very short moment.^ At first you're not going to know you have to do that, because no other Resident Evil game made you pay attention to the on-screen commands during a cut scene.

^ Even for the first hour or so of playing through the game, it just seemed like it wasn't going to make the RE fan in me happy or satisfied.

^ In the ending fight, the words "Finish him" are used, this is straight from the Mortal Kombat games, Paul W.S. Anderson also created the Mortal Kombat movie.

^ On the cover Alice is using a G-36 C with grenade launcher from Heckler & Koch, but she never uses it in the film.

^ The crows that Alice sees at the beginning of the film are digitized.
