"Resistance is futile" is a phrase describing a desperate or failing endeavor. The phrase became "prevalent in popular culture" from its use in the television show Star Trek: The Next Generation.[1][2][3]
The Borg use the phrase in several Star Trek episodes and the film Star Trek: First Contact (1996). Locutus' (Patrick Stewart) delivery of the line in "The Best of Both Worlds" was ranked #93 in TV Land's list of "The 100 Greatest TV Quotes and Catchphrases".[4] The phrase was also the tagline for First Contact.
A similar catchphrase -- "Resistance is useless" -- was earlier used in the television series Doctor Who[5] and by a Vogon from 1978's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.[6]
