Plot

Ariel Wolfe is the sister of Sara Wolfe, a survivor of a massacre some years ago in the sanatorium "Hill-House", which were decades ago guided by the sadistic psychiatrist Dr. Vannacutt. Sara claims, that phantoms had killed her mates, but no one believes her. When Sara commits suicide, Ariel tries to find out why.

A diary of Dr. Vannacutt leads Ariel to the cruel past of "Hill-House". But all of a sudden, she and her friend Paul are kidnapped by the unscrupulous dealer Desmond. Desmond knows a lot about Sara and Hill-House. Ariel is sought to help Desmond to find a precious artifact, a figurine of the demon Baphomet. The artifact is said to be hidden somewhere inside of Hill-House. While Desmond, Ariel, Paul and four stooges of Desmond walk into the sanitarium, Paul and one stooge are said to wait outside - Paul has to be some kind of forfeit. Inside Hill-House Ariel and her kidnappers meet Dr. Hammer and his assistants Kyle and Michelle. Dr. Hammer and Desmond begin to argue. While fighting, they find out that Michelle is a traitor, who seduced Dr. Hammer only to gain information about Hill House and the Baphomet idol.

All of a sudden loud noises sound and a now scared Ariel explains that the master lock of the sanitary was activated. Desmond makes his stooges stop the machine by MPs. After this the group walks down to the basement and splits off. Soon the first stooge gets killed, his body being sucked into a massive wall. Next is Harue, one of Desmond's buddies. She is first panicked by a couple of lesbian ghosts, then sliced up by the undead Dr. Vannacutt. Next victim is Ariel. She is pulled violently into a padded cell and is traumatised by hallucinations transferred by the ghost of a dead ex-patient. He shows Ariel parts of the bygone happenings centuries ago. In lifetime the patient led a revolt against Dr. Vannacutt, in which the sanatorium was burned down. When Ariel wakes up she is straightjacketed and starts to scream. Meanwhile Kyle and a stooge of Desmond reach the entrance hall, where the stooge gets mauled by phantoms. Ariel, Michelle, Desmond and Dr. Hammer go back to the entrance hall, where Paul and his minder appear. Desmond went havoc for he didn´t call the two to come in, but the stooge tells the converse. While bickering suddenly another stooge of Desmond walks away, following some appearance. He is surprised by an undead nurse and then gets killed in cruelest ways by Vannacutt. The team can hear his screams of death via mobile phone. In the following chaos Paul, Kyle and Dr. Hammer successfully wrestle down Desmond and Michelle.

The diary of Dr. Vannacutt and the brought-by-ghosts-visions of Ariel reveal step by step what happened centuries ago. Due to the revolt against Dr. Vannacutt a fire broke out and the patients tried to escape. Entrapped Dr. Vanacutt activated the master lock of the asylum, so the patients could not leave. Except five people everyone was burned alive. The following spook inside the asylum beginning some years later were thought to be the result of the ever-furious patients, their souls seeking for revenge. But now it looks like the ghosts of Hill-House were kept inside the building by some unknown force. Since Dr. Vannacutt was known as the owner of the evil Baphomet-idol it seems as if he was the willing servant of Baphomet, working for the demon. This explains why the originally genius and nice Dr. Vannacutt became heartless and perverted.

The team searches now for the crematory of Hill House. The artifact is said to be hidden in a secret chamber behind the crematory. In a hydro-therapeutic room Kyle is drowned by ghosts in the water, Sara tries to rescue him, but fails. Desmond and Michelle are able to flee, but shortly after Michelle is killed by poltergeist-activity. Desmond, now furious, runs to find the crematory himself. Meanwhile Ariel, Paul and Dr. Hammer find a viaduct leading out of Hill-House, but are trapped by an iron gate. A vision, transmitted by the same phantom like in the padded room before, tells Ariel where to find the crematory. The ghost despairingly begs Ariel to destroy the Baphomet idol, so that the souls can finally leave and rest peacefully. The idol actually keeps all the furious ghosts trapped inside Hill-House. Ariels decides to help and the teams finds the crematory. Inside a hidden room they find the Baphomet idol. When Ariel shoots the idol, the item comes out to be indalecious. Ariel decides to spool the idol out of Hill-House by the viaduct. The team gets surprised while turning back by Desmond, but he is grabbed by ghosts and pushed into one of the corpse-stoves and is burned alive. Paul gets separated from Ariel and Dr. Hammer. While he runs back to the idol chamber, Ariel and Dr. Hammer are back at the viaduct. All of a sudden Dr. Hammer attacks Ariel and tries to strangle her, possessed by Baphomet. While fighting, the ghost of Dr. Vannacutt appears and Dr. Hammer attacks Vannacutt but is killed in the process. Ariel takes the first opportunity and throws the wicked idol into the viaduct. At that moment the curse of Hill-House comes to an end and the ghosts take revenge on Dr. Vannacutt. Ariel runs back to the entrance hall meeting Paul there. They can now leave Hill House.

After the credits, the film shows a couple at play on the beach and attempt to have sex, but the woman notices there is something under the sand they are lying on. They dig and find the statue, creepy noises can be heard as the screen fades to black.

Production

Filming began in Burgas and Sofia, Bulgaria at the Nu Boyana Film Studios on September 11, 2006, where they used various sets and an old bathhouse in Ovcha kupel as substitute locations for the house in the 1999 remake.[citation needed]

Jeffrey Combs reprised his role as Dr. Richard Vannacutt. He stated that he'd have a larger role in this film, and while he had no lines (as in the first film), it made his character "more menacing"; however, he did do some voice-overs after initial filming (these ended up in an alternate scene in the Blu-Ray version.[citation needed]) He also said that much of the movie takes place in the lower floors of the house.

Releases

It was revealed soon after shooting ended that the DVD would be released on September 27, 2007 for North America and on October 3 for Australia; however, Dark Castle Entertainment pushed the release dates to October 16, 2007 and October 10, 2007 for North America and Australia, respectively. For North America, there will be both rated and unrated releases; the "rated" is rated R for strong bloody horror violence, language and brief sexuality/nudity, but the extra content on the "unrated" and other discs means it will go unrated. The Australian version of the film is the same as the US unrated version.[citation needed]

The rated release doesn't include the epilogue scene (after the closing credits) or Mushroomhead's music video; the unrated release includes both.[citation needed]

There will also be unrated Blu-Ray and HD DVD versions, both including Navigational Cinema, a feature that enables viewers to interact with the storyline- at certain points, it allows you to choose from two different paths. A total of seven viewer choices result in 96 possible storylines, according to Joel Silver in a "Return to House on Haunted Hill" online featurette. In another interview, Silver announced the film will have four alternate endings, which are the result of the different choices made during the film.[citation needed]
