Archduke of Austria-Este

Arms of the Dukes of Austria-Este as borne by Archduke Franz Ferdinand during his lifetime.

On 16 April 1917, at the age of two, Robert was created Archduke of Austria-Este by his father, the Emperor. Archduke Robert thereby succeeded his relative, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria (1863-1914), who had held the titles of Austria-Este since 1875. Through his mother Zita (a great-granddaughter of Teresa of Savoy who was daughter of Teresa of Modena who was daughter of Mary Beatrice d'Este and Archduke Ferdinand of Austria), Archduke Robert happened to be a descendant of Ercole III d'Este and thus the blood of last Este dukes joined with the name Austria-Este. Archduke Robert later decreed that all his descendants in male line are entitled to the surname Austria-Este, and he took also the title Duke of Este, which is intended to be carried by the head of the branch of Austria-Este. Upon his death in 1996, he was succeeded as head of the branch by his son, Archduke Lorenz (b. 1955).
