Sampoerna (PT Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna Tbk) IDX: HMSP is an Indonesian tobacco company whose cigarette brands are smoked by millions of Indonesians. It is reportedly the largest Indonesian tobacco company, ahead of Gudang Garam and Djarum. In May, 2005, subsidiaries of Altria Group completed the acquisition of 97.95% of the company. A block of approximately 40% of the outstanding stock was sold by the controlling Sampoerna family, especially by Putra Sampoerna, and other insiders in a negotiated transaction and the remaining shares were purchased in a tender offer. The series of transactions valued the company at approximately $5.2 billion. The investment in Sampoerna represented a strategic move for Altria. Although Marlboro is by far the most popular Western-style (non kretek cigarette), most Indonesians still smoke kretek cigarettes.

Sampoerna is known as a fan of soccer and is often seen in the stadium at every game; in 2006, after Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer was seen giving Sampoerna a contract at the Carling cup final, rumours circulated that he was considering investing in or purchasing a Soccer team. He also owns Mansion88 which is run by the same American and Aussie team that manage to lose 30 million pounds with its Gibraltar based company.

Sampoerna reported 2006 Net Sales of 29.55 trillion Rupiah (approximately $3.22bn using the February 22, 2008 exchange rate) resulting in 3.53 trillion Rupiah Net Income.

It produces kretek-type cigarettes, flavoured with cloves and spices. Its most popular brand is Sampoerna 'A' Mild, a filter cigarette in white paper. The filter has a sweet coating of sugar and spices. Although the cigarette is described as mild, it contains similar tar and nicotine levels to Marlboro Red. Along with variations on the Sampoerna Brand (filterless (known as Hijau, or green), menthol, etc.), the company's other key brand is "234" (pronounced Dji Sam Soe), an unfiltered cigarette with 39 mg of tar and 2.3 mg of nicotine per stick. Dji Sam Soe is the most premium cigarette in Indonesia. Its retail price per pack is the same with Marlboro Red (20 sticks), whilst 234 is packed 12 sticks.[1].

The company is named after the founding Sampoerna family, and was founded in 1913.

In 2001, Putera Sampoerna also founded Sampoerna Foundation [2] (SF), a professional philanthropy organization dedicated to improve the access to and quality of education in Indonesia.

After the Phillip Morris acquisition, the Foundation became an independent entity run by a team of professionals, while the Sampoerna family members remain to be the Foundation's Board of Patrons and Supervisors.

Initially the Foundation only focused on providing scholarships to promising yet financially disadvantaged students. Further developments included the formulation of several quality improvement programs geared towards improving the quality of education in Indonesia. By the end of 2007, SF had awarded scholarships to more than 30,000 students at elementary through to graduate level.

Aside from scholarship provision, SF also established the Sampoerna Foundation United Schools Program (SF USP), Madrasah Quality Improvement Program, Sampoerna Foundation Teacher Institute, and Sampoerna School of Business and Management-Institut Teknologi Bandung (Sampoerna SBM-ITB). Following are some of SF's major milestones:

SF USP [3] has been implemented in 17 Schools in Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Bali, while the Madrasah Quality Improvement Program has been implemented in 5 Madrasahs in Java and Madura.

As of December 2007, SF Teacher Institute [4] has provided professional development training for more than 10,000 teachers across Indonesia.

In 2007, Sampoerna SBM-ITB was awarded international memberships from the finest business school association institutions such as the European Foundation for Management Development EFMD), and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

On 26 May 2008 SF was awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification for its quality management systems.

By 1 April 2009 HM Sampoerna's President Director is John Gledhill who was previously from Phillip Morriss Australia succeeding Martin Gray King who now become Vice Precedent Operations on Phillip Morriss
