The San Francisco Center for the Book (SFCB) is a non-profit organization founded in 1996 by Mary Austin and Kathleen Burch in San Francisco, California in the United States. The first center of its kind on the West Coast, the SFCB was modeled after two similar organizations, The Center for Book Arts in New York City and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts in Minneapolis.
The San Francisco Center for the Book teaches the arts and crafts of hand-made books.
Its mission is to "introduce and foster the joys of books and bookmaking — their history, artistry, continuing presence in our culture and their enduring importance as a medium of self-expression, and to provide both a home for Bay Area book artists and a place where the wider community can discover book arts".
The center offers free events, exhibitions, and teaching workshops from introductory level classes to year-long courses. Subjects range from traditional bookbinding to contemporary printing techniques and experimental book forms.
