Sanjeev Kapoor

Born on April 10, 1964, Sanjeev Kapoor began his quest for culinary greatness in 1984 when he completed a three–year diploma from the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition, PUSA, New Delhi. Later on went on to do his Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.) from Delhi University followed by MBA from NMIMS (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies), Mumbai privately. During the academic days, he received National Scholarship for being in the National Merit List.

Life sketch

International recognition - Launched as brand in UK from the portals of the House of Commons, London by Mr. Fabian Hamilton, MP (North East Leeds, Yorkshire) in the presence of many dignitaries and officials in February, 2009; Guest on the US Rachael Ray Daytime Talk show.

National Award - ‘Best Chef of the Year’ by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

Khana Khazana - ‘Best Cookery Show’ award by Indian Television Academy (ITA) and Indian Telly Awards for Khana Khazana (Annexure 1), the cookery show on television for past 16 years.

Restaurants - Franchise to Sanjeev Kapoor’s brand of restaurants namely Khazana in Dubai and Doha, Options in Dubai; The Yellow Chilli chain of restaurants in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Noida, Panchkula, Guwahati, Greater Noida, Pune, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi. (Annexure 2). Opening shortly is the The Yellow Chilli at Bahrain. Another brand Hot Rocks launched in Hyderabad.

FMCG products - Brand ‘Sanjeev Kapoor’s Khazana’ - wide range of Pickles, Blended Masalas, Sprinklers and 123 Ready To Cook Mixes. Popular in India and abroad. (Annexure 3). Cookery books - Published more than 130 titles. (Annexure 4). Few titles translated into Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and Malayalam. Multimedia CD ROM on Indian Cooking and CD ROM titled ‘Ode to Indian Food’.

Website - Portal is a complete cookery manual with tried and tested recipes. Marked as the best Indian food site by BBC. Very popular especially amongst Indian women as also NRIs who get homesick for Indian food. It has 2 lakh registered users, with a page view of 6 million per month in age group 20-60 years and around 2 million hits a day.

A fan page in FACEBOOK was started in mid-2009 and has 10,000 plus fans and growing. It has more than 500 interactions per week.

Latest initiative is Sanjeev Kapoor’s Khazana, a channel on YOUTUBE.

Formative years

July 1984 - Jan1986

Selected by ITDC under their Kitchen Management Scheme. Had extensive training in different departmetns including non-operational department. Topped the entire batch during Kitchen Training and Executive Training programmes.

Feb. 1986 - July1986

Chef understudy at Hotel Varanasi Ashok.

Aug. 1986 - Sept. 1988

Chef at Hotel Varanasi Ashok, Varanasi. Performed duties of Executive Chef and was instrumental in bringing the unit out of red by increasing the F & B revenue substantially. Was also responsible for the airport restaurant at Varanasi Airport.

Oct. 1988 - May 1989

Chef at Hotel Samrat, New Delhi. Worked as second in command to the Executive Chef. The job involved managing a kitchen catering to a speciality restaurant, a 24 hour coffee shop, room service, banquets and flights.

June 1989 - July 1991

Chief Chef of Shamiana Restaurant, Wellington, New Zealand. The job involved in addition to normal operations; training and promotion of staff. Successfully held various food festivals and cookery classes. The restaurant was graded as the best Indian Restaurant in the country. The turnover of the restaurant exceeded one crore rupees annually. At the same time, was also the Chief Chef for Zanzibar, New Zealand’s first African restaurant.

Aug. 1991- Oct. 1991

Attached with Area General Manager (N), ITDC, in connection with a hotel project at Manali.

Nov 1991- May 1992

Worked in Hotel Ashok, a five star deluxe hotel. Worked as the Chef of Frontier Restaurant, a speciality restaurant serving North - West Frontier cuisine.

June 1992 - Nov 1997

Worked as Executive Chef at Centaur Hotel Juhu Beach, a five star deluxe hotel with 400 rooms. At this time was approached for this cookery show tentatively named Shriman Bawarchi. Quite liked the idea of doing a cookery show on the TV and shot a couple of episodes which got good reviews at the initial showing. But the name ‘Shriman Bawarchi’ did not appeal. But when the producers asked for new suggestions the name ‘Khana Khazana’ cropped up. This name was liked by everyone and Khana Khazana started in 1993.


Opened Indian restaurant in Dubai by the name of Sanjeev Kapoor's Khazana in Dubai.


Organised seminar on ‘Dietetics in Ancient India’ to further strengthen the stronghold of Indian food. Worked in close association with the Institute for Oriental Studies with the help of Dr V V Bedekar to unravel the yet unknown facts of ancient Indian cuisine. Started a chain of cooking schools through franchise network under the banner of National School of Cooking to promote Indian food.

Part of Catering team for Asian Games 1982 at Delhi, Non-Aligned Meet at Delhi-Catered to more than 100 Heads of Government, CHOGM 1983 at Delhi, SAARC at Shillong, Africa Fund Summit at Delhi, Seven Nations Summit at Delhi, ASTA Conference at Delhi, Commonwealth Parliamentary Affairs Conference at Delhi.

Chef for Food Festival of India celebrations in Moscow, USSR. Catered to 10,000 persons daily.

Chef In-charge for catering arrangements at Patna for IMA. Catered meals for 8,000 people everyday for a week.

Sole in-charge of catering arrangements at Allahabad during Kumbh Mela. A team of 100 cooks was deputed to cater to about 10,000-15,000 people daily.

Organised Pakhtooni Davat, in-flight food festival in collaboration with Air India on flights to Europe, USA & Canada, Japan, and Gulf countries.

Organised Shakahari, in-flight food festival with Air India.

Was part of catering team for VVIP's including Prime Minister and President of India.

Organised Indian Food Festival in Hotel Osaka Hilton, Osaka, Japan in June 1993.

Organised Indian Food and Tea Festival in Holiday Inn, Montreal, Canada, in November-December 1994.

Conducted Culinary Training and Demonstrations at London, for the flight catering in September1995.

Participated in Anuga Food Fair, Cologne, Germany in October 1995.

Participated in Food & Hotel Asia 1996 in Singapore.

Participated in Singapore Food Festival in July 1996 as a Guest Chef from India to promote New Asia Cuisine. Special invitee of Singapore Tourism Promotion Board.

Re-launched Best Indian Restaurant in Montreal, Canada in February 1997.

Father was a Bank Manager and mother a housewife. Have an elder brother Rajeev and a younger sister Namrata.

Spouse Alyona was born in Vladivostok in Russia on 22 April, 1967. Her father, a naval architect, was posted in Russia at that time. She has an elder sister Vandana and a younger sister Jyotsna.

Two daughters Rachita and Kriti.

Favourite food: Rajma Chawal, Kadhi Chawal.

Love to read (have a collection of books) and listen to music, and play drums.

Sanjeev Kapoor’s Khana Khazana

In 1993, launched Khana Khazana, a cookery show for Zee TV, that has gone on to become the most successful cookery show from India with an estimated viewership of over 500 million people in about 167 countries. Khana Khazana is over 800 episodes old – a record breaking feat in the Indian culinary visual media. Such is the trust the show has generated among the viewers that we get requests through mail from newly engaged girls asking for their photographs to be shown on the show because that would help them impress their in-laws-to-be. Very often receive requests for repeat telecast of any particular episode. Also produced and anchored an ethnic Indian food show called A Touch of Turmeric for an international channel.
