Economy

Though the main business activity is centered in the trading and service sector, Sant Boi has also a remarkable industrial activity, especially for metallurgy; agriculture is stimulated by the fertile alluvial lands at the mouth of Llobregat river and a mild climate, producing a wide variety of vegetables like the famous Llobregat's delta artichokes.

Politics

The mayor is Jaume Bosch i Puges (PSC). The city council's seats are as follows:

PSC 13 (social democrat)
ICV 3 (ecologist, socialist and regionalist)
PP 3 (right-wing, Christian democracy)
CiU 3 (liberal democracy and regionalist)
ERC 2 (independentist and socialist)
C's 1 (pro-Spanish)

History

The finding of archeological remains corresponding to Iberian colonies (VI-I bC) and the Romans (I-V aC) - a noteworthy Roman bath is located near the river - suggests that the origins of Sant Boi can be found in pre-Roman times.

Like most of the surrounding lands, from the 7th to the 12th century the town was controlled by the Moors, until their expulsion from Iberia during the Reconquista. The Moors called it "Alcala", which means castle, due to the existence of a hillock from where the river and the valley were dominated. Its present name derives from the name of Saint Baudilus, known as Boi or Baldiri in Catalonia.[1]

During the Middle Ages the village was progressively populated, growing from the surroundings of the castle to adjacent zones. A baroque style church is built during the XVI century. The growth keeps on during the following centuries, giving rise to numerous "Masies" (typical Catalan agricultural housing) near the river and the most fertile lands. At the end of the nineteenth century Sant Boi was a village of nearly 5000 inhabitants, with an economy mainly based in agriculture.

At the beginnings of the twentieth century the first industries flourished in Sant Boi, ranging from brick manufacture to metalwork. With the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939 there is a massive inflow of immigration coming from diverse points of the Spanish geography. These flows of population consisted mainly in people from villages and small towns searching a job and career opportunities in the town of Barcelona, stimulated by the increasing demand of workmanship in the regrowth of the Catalan industry during the postwar period. The population rises from 10.000 people in 1940 to 65.000 in 1975. This period is characterized by the construction of complete quarters (Casablanca, Camps Blancs, Cooperativa) dedicated to housing for the immigration.

Nowadays Sant Boi is a town with more than 80,000 inhabitants, with well-established industrial and services sectors, and a healthy cultural and recreational offer.

Sant Boi is a city near the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, in the south of Catalonia. It has a population of 80.000 people and it’s 11 Km to the biggest city, Barcelona.

Currently , Sant Boi is a beautiful village, much more than twenty-one years ago, when I arrived here. There are some new buildings and beautiful places, like two big sport centers and a new park called “La Muntanyeta”. It’s the biggest park of Sant Boi. There is a lake, a swimming pool, restaurants, skating rink, auditorium, picnic place, and roads for walking around and riding by bicycle. Near the park, two years ago, the big public library was built, which has big windows, a lot of books and computers, and a good restaurant.

There are some historical buildings like the “Saint Baldiri church” and the “Saint Ramon hermitage”. One of the nicest views of Sant Boi is at night: the church reflected on the Llobregat river and the illuminated hermitage hung in the sky (the mountain is not visible). You can visit the Roman Baths and his museum, the Rafael Casanova’s tomb and the Psychiatric Hospital. There are a lot of shops and five markets. Every Saturday, people can visit the two street markets in Sant Boi. There is a shopping center too, “Alcampo”.

The weather is Mediterranean, with hot summers and soft winters; it usually rains in spring and in autumn.

In December, Sant Boi is famous for the Purissima’s fair, where different sectors of industry and trade show their new products. Also, there is a beautiful exhibition of fruits and vegetables by farmers, craft stalls and many activities for children and old people. In September we celebrate the festival of music “Altaveu”, which brings together many groups and Catalan singers.

Sant Boi is also a committed city to the environment. There are containers to recycle glass, paper, plastic and organic materials. Now, families carry their old oil to recycle to the schools. The council has arranged the margins of the river by planting trees. On sunny weekends many people can go riding, walking or jogging.

Sant Boi is very beautiful and it’s great for walking around. There is a park called “Muntanyeta” with a lot of nature: plenty of trees, plants and oxygen, of course. In the center of the town there is a church, which was built in the 13th century. From this, you have a very nice view you can see the Llobregat river and the bridge of AVE. On the right, on a mountain there is a big house, now called “Hotel El Castillo” Also, there is a big area shopping called “Alcampo”, with a lot of supermarkets: Alcampo, Leroy Merlin, Kiabi, Toys”R”us, Boulanger and Decathlon.

We have here Mediterranean weather: good weather all year, but the summer is boiling hot because the sea is nearby.

Sant Boi is famous in Spain for its Mental Hospital, The town is called “Villa Hospitalaria”also it’s well known because Rafael Casanova died and was buried here. And the archaeologists had found the important “Termes Romanes”.

In December there is a popular festival called ”Fira de la Purísima”, there are a lot of exhibitions of vegetables, plants, decoration objectes…and a lot of machines like cars, tractors…There is another important festival that takes place in May: “La Festa Major” and in summer, each neighbourhood celebrates its events with dances, parades and fireworks.

The city is famous also for a long tradition in two sports: rugby and baseball.

I live in Sant Boi, which is a town in the south of Barcelona in Catalonia. With a population of 85,000 people, it’s the biggest industrial town in Baix Llobregat.

I think that the best things about Sant Boi are: It is near Barcelona and the town has a very good connection with it, by tren and by bus. I like Sant Boi because I have lived here since that I was nine years old. I live in Sant Boi de Llobregat, which is a city in the east of Catalonia, near Barcelona. It has got a population of 85,000 people.

It’s a beatiful town and there’s a mountain called Sant Ramon which is interesting to walk around because you can have very nice view of the Baix Llobregat . In the center of the town there is a church which was built in the 13th Century. Rafael Casanova died in this town and was buried here.

There is a bigger shopping area called Alcampo where there are a lot of of supermarkets: Alcampo, Kiabi, Toyr’s, Leroy Merlin, Decathon and Boulangere. You can buy everything you want.

Sant Boi has got here Mediterranean climate. Good weather all year, but in the summer it is boiling hot because the coast is nearby.

Sant Boi is famous for its Madhouse which is the biggest centre in Spain and it is called “Vila Hospitalaria” A famous basketball player in NBA Pau Gasol was born in this town.

There is a festival on 20th May in honour a Sant Baldiri our patron saint with a lot of fireworks.

I think that the best things about Sant Boi are:

 - It’s near Barcelona but it’s a quiet place.

- It’s a town where people know each other.

I like Sant Boi because I have lived here since I was 6 years old. I live in Sant Boi de Llobregat, which is a city in the south of Barcelona. It has a population of 80.000 people. Sant Boi isn’t very big.

It’s a beautiful city. I live near Catalunya square, this is my favourite area. Here there are some shops and Banks and the bus-stop. Also there are some coffee shops, sometimes I go there with my friends.

The weather here is very cold and humid in winter. Sometimes it rains for days. The summer is very hot.

Sant Boi is famous for Pau Gasol he plays in NBA in Laker’s team. But the biggest tourist attraction is probably “the Termes Romanes” and the museum near the river. I live in Sant Boi, which is a city in the south of Barcelona. It has approximately 80.000 people. It’ s an important city of Barcelona.

It’s a beautiful city, and it’s great for walking around. There are some churches, three musical pubs, a lot of bars, some libraries, and other interesting things. At night, young people go out around the older neighbourhood, where there are some bars and three musical pubs. And there are beautiful girls too.

The weather in Sant Boi is similar to Barcelona and Valencia, the Mediterranean climate. The winter is cold (this year is colder than another years) and the summer is very hot, it’s great for going to the beach, which is near Sant Boi.

Everybody knows Sant Boi because it has a psychiatric hospital, everybody says: Sant Boi is the crazy’s city. But in my city there are more sights. For example, there are the roman baths, an important building which was built many years ago.

In sports Sant Boi is a famous city because the Gasol brothers were born there. They studied in a school of Sant Boi: the Llor, which is a private school. In this section, we can talk about rugby, because we have an important team in this sport, the Samboyana, which is one of the best team in Spain.

I recommend to visit Sant Boi, it is a interesting city, specially on Saturday nights. If you go there, you can telephone me and I’ll tell you more things about my city.
