Saroj Khan (Hindi सरोज ख़ाँ) born Nirmala Sadhu Khan is one of the most prominent dance choreographers in Hindi cinema in India. She was born on Born in 22nd November 1948[1] and has choreographed more than 200 films. After making her debut as an independent choreographer in Gulzar's Mausam (1975), her first breakthrough came with Subhash Ghai's Hero (1983), but it was Sridevi's nagin dance in Nagina (1986) where she was noticed for her talent, followed up by Mr India. Next she worked with Madhuri Dixit in 'Ek Do Teen' number, Tezaab (1989) and later in Khalnayak, where she chorographed the Choli ke Peeche' number.

Presently she hosts her own Dance class show, Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan on NDTV Imagine. She has also appeared as a judge on reality dance competitions shows such as, Nach Baliye and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. She has won Filmfare Best Choreography Award eight times, and National Film Award for Best Choreography thrice.

Early life

She was mostly trained in dance by B. Sohanlal. Saroj Khan’s real name is Nirmala Sadhu Songh. Father: Kishanchand Sadhu Singh Mother: Noni Sadhu Singh Saroj’s parents migrated from Pakistan to India during the partition in 1947. Saroj worked as a child actor in the movie Tarana at that time she was only two years old. You will not find her name in the cast but if you watch the movie she has played the little Shayama sitting on the moon and singing.

At the age of thirteen Saroj Khan married B. Sohanlal who was a well known dance master at that time. Sohanlal was 41 years old and already married and had 4 children. At the age of fourteen she gave birth to her first child Raju Raju Khan is now a famous choreographer). In 1965 she separated from Sohanlal, but kept working as his assistant. They reunited again when Sohanlal had an heart attack. Saroj Khan had another child from Sohan Lal, her daughter cuckoo. Sohanlal then moved to Madras leaving behind Saroj and two children. Afterward she married with Sardar Roshan Khan and she give birth to a daughter named Sukaina khan

Career

She shot to fame after her hit dance choreograph for Nagina "Main Tere Dushman". She rose and choreographed some hit dance numbers for the queens of Bollywood like Madhuri Dixit (Tezaab, Beta) and Sridevi (Mr India), during the late 80s and early 90s. She also opened a dancing institute in Dubai at 29-Nov-2009 [2][3]

Television appearances

Saroj Khan has also appeared in a reality dance show as a member of the jury in 2005 Nach Baliye which aired on STAR One along with two other judges. She also appeared in the 2nd season of the same show. She has also recently been a judge for the show "ustaadon ka ustaad" which is aired on Sony entertainment television Asia. She appeared in the 2008 show Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan, which was aired on NDTV Imagine. She choreographed for this show. She is appearing on Sony's Boogie Woogie (TV series) show starting December 2008 as one of the judges along with Javed Jaffrey, Naved Jaffrey and Ravi Behl she will also be a judge on the third season of popular show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa which will begin on 27 February 2009 and air on Sony Entertainment Television Asia alongside former Nach Baliye judge Vaibhavi Merchant and actress Juhi Chawla
