Saviours' Day is a holiday of the Nation of Islam (NOI), and the Nation of Gods and Earths. It falls on February 26 and celebrates the birthday of Wallace Fard Muhammad, founder of the NOI.
It was established by Elijah Muhammad and first held in Detroit, Michigan. Warith Deen Mohammed, the successor to Elijah Muhammad, changed the name of the celebration to Survival Day in 1977[1] and then to Ethnic Survival Day from 1978 to 1979 and made it a week long celebration. The change formed part of his rejection of his father's portrayal of W.D. Fard as a divine savior.[2][3] Warith Deen Mohammed eventually discontinued the celebration of Survival Day for his community.
Louis Farrakhan reinstalled Saviours' Day when he rebuilt his version of the Nation of Islam and in recent years the celebration has become a two-day gathering with keynote speakers, seminars and activities.
Warith Deen Mohammed re-instituted Saviours' Day for his community on Feb 26, 2000.
The current Nation of Islam uses the British spelling version of the word saviour (rather than the US spelling savior) and places a possessive apostrophe at the end of the word rather than before the S, which might denote other saviors besides Fard.[4]
