The Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union heads the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union. The current Secretary General is Pierre de Boissieu, who entered office 1 December 2009.

With the creating of the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy in 1999, it was decided the Secretary-General would occupy that post simultaneously. However at a meeting of the European Council on 19 November 2009 it was decided, with the post of High Representative being expanded, this would no longer be the case and Pierre de Boissieu was appointed as the new secretary-general but not the High Representative.[1]
