Both Kampung Bukit Sekilau and the Bukit Sekilau Area are named after Bukit Sekilau, or Sekilau Hill itself3. The hill's given name is in honour of the legendary Malay freedom fighter Mat Kilau4; who revolted against the British in the 1890s. To get to SKBS, look for the Bukit Sekilau Mosque5; because the school is right next to it.

Brief history

The construction of Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Sekilau was completed in the middle of the first term of 1980. However, due to an acute lack of furniture, SKBS could only open its doors on January 5, 1981. The first batch of Standard One students was 188 strong (113 boys and 75 girls). These students were divided into 5 classes : 1 Bijak, 1 Pintar, 1 Rajin, 1 Cerdik and 1 Usaha.

SKBS' first principal was Madam Chen Chin Fock (formerly of Sek Men Air Putih, Kuantan). Madam Chen eventually went on transfer to Sek Keb Assunta, Kuantan on September 9, 1981. In her absence, Senior Assistant En Abdul Hamid b Ali (formerly of SK Batu Lapan, Kuantan) played the role of Acting Principal until December 31, 1981.

SKBS' pioneers consisted of 9 academic (including the 2 administrators) and 5 non-academic staff. On June 4, 1983, this institution was officially opened by Encik Abdullah, on behalf of the Mentri Besar (Chief Minister) of Pahang.
