With the privatization of the JNR on April 1, 1987, it came under the operational control of JR East. Work on a new station building began in July 2007, with completion expected by December 2010. Plans exist to continue the line to Hakodate as part of the HokkaidÅ Shinkansen by 2015.
Shin-Aomori Station has a single side platform for bi-directional traffic. At present, the station is unattended. In 2010, a new station is scheduled to open with a single island platform for ÅŒu Main Line trains, serving two tracks. The Shinkansen station will consist of two island platforms serving four tracks. The platforms will be 263 meters long and capable of handling 10-car trains.[2]
