History

St Andrew's School first opened its doors in 1948 with an enrollment of 24 students. Its first headmaster was Reverend J. H. Poole, the Minister then in charge of St Andrew's Presbyterian Kirk. For the next two years, the students were accommodated in the Kirk Hall, and the name St Andrew's was permanently adopted.

The School was founded by a group of parents who wanted their children to be prepared for admission into private boarding schools by the age of 13. In the 1940s, other institutions on the island did not offer some of the subjects (including Latin, Greek, French, Algebra or Geometry) required for admission. The school now offers BGCSE (Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education) courses in Years 10 and 11, as well as International Baccalaureate courses in Years 12 and 13. The curriculum is very intensive.

Up to date information

Mrs. Sharon Wilson is the new principal, after the leave of Mr. Bob Wade. Though the St. Andrew's School has a religious background, because it is an internation school, it does not teach Religious Studies. Possibly the only religious practice/studies in the school is currently the "Word of Life" club.
