From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stadacona was a 16th century St. Lawrence Iroquoian village near present-day Quebec City. French explorer and navigator Jacques Cartier, travelling and charting the Saint Lawrence River, reached it on 7 September 1535. With the aid of two Aboriginals from Stadacona, he was able to travel to Hochelaga and the Lachine Rapids. He returned to Stadacona to spend the winter there with his group of 110 men.

Cartier kidnapped Donnacona the chief, two interpreters, two headmen and five children, of which nine of ten died in France. He returned in 1541 with several hundred colonists, but, having angered the Stadaconans, his colony didn't last.
