Stagecoach North East is a major operator of bus services in North East England. It is a subsidiary of the Stagecoach Group. The company is made up of two formerly municipal operations; Busways and Transit.

Busways Travel Services Ltd.

Stagecoach's first presence in the North East of England came with the acquisition of Busways in July 1994 from its employees and management shareholders. Busways Travel Services Ltd. is now a holding company for Stagecoach North East's operations in Newcastle, South Shields and Sunderland, the three locations in which Busways operated.

Stagecoach in South Shields

Stagecoach is the largest operator of local services in South Shields. The depot is in the Chichester area of the town, known locally as Chi. Stagecoach in South Shields operates mostly local services within South Shields, however services linking the town to Jarrow, Sunderland, Gateshead and Newcastle are also operated. Stagecoach in South Shields is the eventual successor to South Shields Corporation Transport. Details on services operated by Stagecoach in South Shields are given below.

  • 3 • 4 - South Shields Market - Biddick Hall (Circular)
    Operated with TransBus Dart SLF/TransBus Pointer 2s and Alexander Dennis Dart SLF/Alexander Dennis Pointer 2s. Each service runs every ten minutes Monday to Saturday daytimes and every thirty minutes evenings and Sundays. Services 3 and 4 are interworked with services 7 and 8. Areas served include; Town Centre, Westoe, Chichester, Harton Nook, Stanhope Road, Temple Park, Tyne Dock, Nevinson Avenue and Biddick Hall.
  • 7 • 8 - South Shields Market - Marsden (Circular)
    Operated with TransBus Dart SLF/TransBus Pointer 2s and Alexander Dennis Dart SLF/Alexander Dennis Pointer 2s. Each service runs every ten minutes Monday to Saturday daytimes and every thirty minutes evenings and Sundays. Services 7 and 8 are interworked with services 3 and 4. Areas served include; Town Centre, Laygate, Westoe, Chichester, Highfield Road, Mortimer Road, Horsley Hill, Harton Nook and Marsden.
  • 10 • 11 - South Shields Market - Low Simonside
    Formally circular services also serving Stanhope Road and Laygate services 10 and 11 now serve Low Simonside as part of an agreement with Nexus. The service is operated with a variety of Dennis Darts, mostly Alexander Dash bodied examples. Services 10 and 11 run every thirty minutes throughout the day and are usually operated by any spare low floor midibuses during evenings and Sunday. Areas served include; Town Centre, Low Simonside, Beach Road, Simondise, Bents Park, Biddick Hall, Bamburgh Avenue, South Tyneside District Hospital, Horsley Hill, Whiteleas, Temple Park Road, Harton Nook and Marsden.
  • 12 - Mile End Road - The Lonnen
    Service 12 runs every thirty minutes throughout the day with MAN 14.240/Alexander Dennis Enviro200s. Areas Served include; Mile End Road, The Lonnen, Town Centre, Watson Avenue, Laygate, Harton Nook, Tyne Dock, Harton Moor and South Tyneside District Hospital.
  • 13 • 14 - South Shields Market - Jarrow Bus Station
    Services 13 and 14 formally formed a circular service, complimenting services 11 and 10 respectively. Now services 13 and 14 still provide this same service between South Shields Market, Horsley Hill and Simonside but now continue to Jarrow Bus Station as part of an agreement with Nexus. The service is operated with a variety of Dennis Darts, mostly Alexander Dash bodied examples. Services 13 and 14 operate every thirty minutes Monday - Saturday daytimes only. Services 10 and 11 offer alternative facilities at other times. Areas served include; South Shields Town Centre, Jarrow Town Centre, Beach Road, Hill Park Estate, Bents Park, Low Simonside, Highfield Road, Simonside, Horsley Hill, Biddick Hall, Harton Nook, Whiteleas, Temple Park Road and South Tyneside District Hospital.
  • 17 - South Shields Market - Whiteleas
    Service 17 is operated with MAN 14.240/Alexander Dennis Enviro200s and provides a ten minute frequency service Monday - Saturday daytimes and thirty minute frequency evenings and Sundays. Areas served include; Town Centre, Whiteleas, Laygate, Boldon Lane, Chichester and Stanhope Road. Service 17 is interworked with service 18.
  • 18 - South Shields Market - Brockley Whins
    Service 18 is operated with MAN 14.240/Alexander Dennis Enviro200s and provides a ten minute frequency service Monday - Saturday daytimes and thirty minute frequency evenings and Sundays. Areas served include; Town Centre, Brockley Whins, Westoe, Simonside, Chichester, Boldon Lane and Stanhope Road. Service 18 is interworked with service 17.
  • 30 - South Shields Market - Boldon Colliery
    Service 30 operates a thirty minute frequency service Monday - Saturday daytimes only. Evening and Sunday service is provided by a combination on Go North East commercial service and Nexus Secured Service (operated by Go North East). Service 30 is operated by a mix of vehicles, usually High Floor Dennis Darts, however Volvo B10M/Alexander PS are also common. Service 30 is interworked with service X20. Areas served include; Town Centre, Boldon Colliery, Westoe, West Boldon, Harton Nook, East Boldon, Ridgeway and Cleadon
  • E1 • E2 • E6 - South Shields - Sunderland
    The 'Economic' services (named after the company that was taken over in 1975 by TWPTE) run from South Shields Market to Sunderland Park Lane Interchange via Whitburn. All three services are operated using Volvo B10BLE/Alexander ALX300s and provide a twenty minute frequancy each Monday - Saturday daytimes, reducing to thirty minutes on evenings and Sundays. Areas served include; South Shields Town Centre, Sunderland City Centre, South Shields Sea Front (E1), Monkwearmouth, Town Hall (E2, E6), Harbour View (E1), Fulwell (E2, E6), Chichester (E2, E6), Highfield Road (E1), Seaburn, Horsley Hill (E1, E2), Harton Nook (E6), Marsden Inn, Marsden Grotto (E1), Lizard Lane (E2, E6) and Whitburn.
  • X20 - South Shields Market - Fellgate
    Service X20 operates a thirty minute frequency service Monday - Saturday daytimes only. Service X20 is operated by a mix of vehicles, usually High Floor Dennis Darts, however Volvo B10M/Alexander PS are also common. Service X20 is interworked with service 30. Areas served include; Town Centre, Fellgate, Chichester, Hedworth, Tyne Dock and Simonside.
  • X34 - Horsley Hill - Newcastle, Pilgrim Street
    Service X34 is operated with Volvo B10M/Alexander PS , one of which is painted in a special pink livery in support of Breast Cancer Care. The service operated Monday - Saturday Daytimes only with the thirty minute frequency. Serving Harton Nook, Marsden, Horsley Hill, Harton, Temple Park, Whiteleas, Boldon Colliery, then running non-stop to Gateshead, then onto Newcastle. A special Sunday service is usually operated in the run up to Christams.

Stagecoach in Sunderland

Sunderland operates a large network of local services in the city. The depot is in Wheatsheaf, which is also the head office of Stagecoach North East. Sunderland’s operations are confined to the city’s boundaries.

Cleveland Transit Ltd.

Stagecoach acquired Cleveland Transit in September 1994. The group also acquired Kingston upon Hull City Transport, now part of Stagecoach East Midlands. Darlington Transport Company Limited (DTC) refused to sell to Stagecoach, so was ran off the road [1]. Hartlepool Transport agreed a sale with Stagecoach. The Stagecoach Darlington company was sold to Arriva in 2007.

Hartlepool operates a network of local services around Hartlepool. It also operates service 1 to Middlesbrough.

Teesside serves Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees with a network of local services. The 36 to Hartlepool is also operated. Teesside is the former Cleveland Transit.

Stagecoach in Darlington

The newly acquired Busways company was a key participant in the Darlington Bus War, which ended with a new Stagecoach presence in Darlington. The Stagecoach Darlington company later passed from Busways to Transit.

On 9th May 2007 it was announced by Arriva North East a conditional deal with Stagecoach to take over the Darlington division, providing the Office of Fair Trading did not refer to deal to the Competition Commission. In the deal Arriva would merge its current Darlington operation with Stagecoach's and use the current Stagecoach Darlington depot in Faverdale.

On 22nd August 2007 the OFT announced it was not to refer the sale to the Competition Commission. On the same day Stagecoach announced the deal would be going ahead. On 23rd August 2007 Arriva announced it was to take over Stagecoach Darlington's operations on 26th August 2007.
