Steve was born near Asheville, North Carolina and was raised as a Methodist. He attended High Point College where he earned a BA in Philosophy and Boston University where he earned the STB. After pastoring a church on Cape Cod, he moved to Key Biscayne Presbyterian Church in Florida, where he pastored for 25 years and started Key Life Network. After several publications, King College awarded him a Litt.D.. During this time he was part of a television show called "Hashing It Out," where he and his friend Tony Campolo would debate current events and theological issues.

Upon retiring from the pulpit, Brown accepted a position at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida, to become the Professor of Communication and Practical Theology/Homiletics. He is also the host of "Steve Brown Etc.", a Saturday night Christian talk show on the Radio America Network. He often preaches during weekend services at his home church in Winter Springs, Florida.

Steve is also on the teaching staff of Perimeter Church in Duluth, GA.

In November 2009, Brown signed an ecumenical statement known as the Manhattan Declaration calling on evangelicals, Catholics and Orthodox not to comply with rules and laws forcing them to accept abortion, same-sex marriage and other matters that go against their religious consciences.[1]
