The films plot will concern a convicted arsonist (Norton), who tries to manipulate his way out of prison by making his wife (Jovovich), have an affair with a parole officer (De Niro), before eventually playing dangerous psychological games with him.
Edward Norton and Robert De Niro pair up for the second time to star in the indie psychological film Stone. This will be their second appearance in a “cat and mouse” type plot, the first was in 2001’s underrated heist thriller The Score.
The film is directed by John Curran, and the script was written by a Winston-Salem screenwriter and playwright, Angus MacLachlan. Originally written as a play in 2000, MacLachlan turned the play into a screenplay in 2005, with the film aiming to be released in 2010. Filming began on 18 May, 2009 in Michigan. The play version of ‘Stone’ has been performed only once, as a staged reading in 2003 at a forum in Los Angeles. Production of the film will be overseen by Mimran Shur Pictures, with the aid of Holly Wiersma. "Stone" marks the debut film of Mimran Shur Pictures, a company formed earlier this year by private investor David Mimran and longtime music biz executive and former Geffen Records prexy Jordan Schur. Stone Productions, the movie's production company , also aided in the production of the film.
Filming was interrupted on June the 5th when a drunk woman got past security on the set and accosted De Niro, who she claimed to be a fan of. She was subsequently arrested and admitted to a local hospital. It is unknown whether or not she will face charges.
In 2008, the State of Michigan enacted a 42-percent tax rebate to attract movie makers , which drew filmmakers into southern Michigan. The crew was originally interested in filming in North Carolina, however with North Carolina's current 15 percent tax rebate the producers chose to shoot the film in Michigan instead. The original screenplay was intended to be set in a location outside of Michigan, but in the case of “Stone”, rewriting the script to be set elsewhere wasn't a problem in terms of the story. MacLachlan quotes in the Winston-Salem Journal, “It's not about a city, it's more about the people in it. Plus, we needed a big prison and there's a huge prison in Jackson, Mich. We stayed in Ann Arbor and filmed in Ypsilanti, Jackson and Dexter." Stated in an article found in The Ann Arbor News, the State of Michigan is being reimbursed about $70,000 for use of the prison, which closed in 2007, and for time spent by state employees helping the crew. Washtenaw County was utilized for the majority of the filming.
