State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta on the way has become a center of excellence in the field of Islamic sciences and known as the feeder for other State Islamic University in Indonesia. In the latest development, UIN Sunan Kalijaga has seven Faculties, namely Faculty of Adab, Da'wah, Sharia, Tarbiyah, Ushuluddin, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences and Humanities, Plus Graduate programs. With 24 courses and curricula continue to be evaluated and improved so that more and more relevant to the demands of the times, UIN Sunan Kalijaga equip and ready to deliver students into the world of work and entrepreneurial.

History

The desire to establish Islamic institutions of higher education that have been initiated since the colonial era. Dr. Wirjosandjojo Satiman gave the idea of the importance of an Islamic institution of higher education in an effort to raise self-esteem of the Muslims in the Dutch East Indies ground. The idea was realized on July 8, 1945 when the Islamic High School (STI) stood in Jakarta. At the time of the revolution,STI move to Yogyakarta and on 10 April 1946 can be reopened in the city of Yogyakarta. In November 1947 a committee was formed STI improvements, which the meeting agreed to establish the Indonesian Islamic University (UII) on March 10, 1948 with four faculties: Religion, Law, Economics, and Education.

As a form of government recognition for the city of Yogyakarta as a revolution, to the nationalist groups are given the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) is regulated by Government Regulation no. 37 in 1950. In the development of Islamic University of Indonesia is growing rapidly and has 22 branches in the entire Faculty of Indonesia. Meanwhile, the Islamic group was given Islamic University Affairs (PTAIN), which is taken from the Faculty of Religious Indonesian Islamic University (UII). So basically UIN Sunan Kalijaga a fraction of the Indonesian Islamic University, because at that moment occurred at the Faculty of fusion of Indonesian Islamic University (UII) based on government regulations that prohibit the Faculty of branches. Other faculties such as Faculty of Medicine University of Islam Indonesia (UII) is now the State University of Eleven March (UNS) in Surakarta, Faculty of Education to the State University of Yogyakarta (UNY) and many other Faculties into Higher Education is broken UII. So when this Indonesian Islamic University (UII) and UIN Sunan Kalijaga been separated into different institutions. Based on Government Regulation No.34 Year 1950 PTAIN has four departments, namely Department of Da'wah (Ushuludin later), Qodlo (later Sharia), and Education (later Tarbiyah). While in Jakarta, six years later Religion Bureaus Academy (ADIA) Founded on August 14, 1957 based on the determination of the Minister of Religious No. 1 Year 1957.

In order to make ADIA Jakarta and PTAIN Yogyakarta better meet the needs of Muslims, then issued Presidential Regulation No. 11 on the Formation of the State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN) Al-Jami'ah Al-Islamiyah al-Hukumiyah based in Yogyakarta, with PTAIN as a parent and ADIA Jakarta as the faculty of the Institute. IAIN was inaugurated on August 24, 1960 in Yogyakarta by the Minister of Religious Affairs, KH. Wahib Wahab. IAIN the rapid development led to the issuance of Presidential Regulation No. 27 of 1963 which allows the establishment of a separate IAIN from the center. Based on the Decree of the Minister of Religion No. 26 in 1965, then as of July 1, 1965, Al-Jami'ah IAIN in Yogyakarta was given the name of Sunan Kalijaga, the name of a famous propagator of Islam in Indonesia.

Institutionally, IAIN Sunan Kalijaga now transformation has become the State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga based on the Decree of Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs Minister and Number 01/0/SKB/2004 Number ND/BV/I/Hk.001/058 / 04 On January 23, 2004, is reinforced by the Republic of Indonesia Presidential Decree Number 50 Year 2004 Date June 21, 2004.
