The new airport is accessible through Gaurav Path, a newly developed express-road at Piplod. There is currently no means of public transport to and from the Surat Airport.

The Airport Authority of India announced that Surat Airport's requires 1000 hectares of land for International Airport, and the Gujarat government has allocated such land for the development. Planned improvements include a night landing system, and the capacity to handle up to 70 jets at a time. Other developments include extending the runway to 2500 meters.

Surat airport will have Instrument Landing System (ILS) to provide precision guidance to aircraft approaching a runway. A combination of radio signals and high-intensity lighting arrays will enable a safe landing during Instrument Meteorological Condition (IMC) such as low ceilings or reduced visibility due to fog and rain.

New Surat airport terminal building was inaugurated on 27 February 2009 by Praful Patel. The terminal building constructed at a cost of Rs 40 crore has a total floor area of 8,500 sq mt to handle more than 270 passengers. It is equipped with CCTV cameras, two conveyors at the arrival building, one hand baggage X-ray machine among other modern facilities. Soon, the terminal building will have two air bridges with visual docking guidance system, two elevators and two escalators, and 120 seats lounge. Work for the second floor of the terminal building is yet to be completed. Photos given above shows glimpses of new terminal.[2][3]
