Survival of the Dead takes place in a desperate, nightmarish world where the dead walk the earth, relentlessly attacking the living. It is the story of Plum Island - a beautiful refuge whose isolation allows two powerful families to maintain a semblance of order in the wake of the zombie holocaust. But as the inhabitants slowly die off, the two clans become sharply divided: The O'Flynns believe that the undead must be destroyed without exception, while the Muldoons insist that afflicted loved ones be kept "alive" until a cure is found. Into this situation wander a small group of National Guard troops who have decided to strike out on their own in a an effort to survive.[5]
Although independently produced, the distributor of this film has been confirmed as Artfire Pictures.[7] This will be Romero's sixth 'Dead' film.[14] On July 21, 2009 it was announced the full title of the film is George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead.[15]
In September/October 2009 George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, Venice Film Festival (where it screened for the festival's top prize, the Golden Lion), Trinity of Terrors,[16] Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, and Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal, introduced by George A. Romero.[17] It is the sixth film in Romero's "Dead" series.[18] The film was released on DVD on March 15, 2010 in the United Kingdom.[19] In the United States it will be released on April 30 2010 for Video on Demand[20] and a theatrical release on May 28.[21]
