Rock and roll first entered Switzerland in the 1950s, as a series of American musicians popularized the style internationally.

The band Krokodil was an influential group, the first to bring progressive rock to Switzerland. Composed of Zürich-scene veterans Hardy Hepp, Walty Anselmo and Düde Dürst with Mojo Weideli and English bassist Terry Stevens, Krokodil used exotic elements like the sitar.

In 1978 Flame Dream a progressive rock band from Lucerne Weggis Switzerland released their first album "Calatea" on Philips Records ;a band that could have been compared to Genesis during the Peter Gabriel era (similar vocals flutes,keyboards) with influences of Van Der Graaf Generator (dark climates and sax),Yes, and Gentle Giant .Other prog bands include the Italian-speaking Marco Zappa and the Francophone Pacific Sound.

The Swiss psychedelia scene produced bands like The Shiver, Brainticket and Ertlif;Lucerne's Flame Dream. Bern's Sinus Studio was long the most influential studio in Switzerland.

The Swiss sound of hard rock included bands like legends Toad, a bluesy band known for their debut single "Stay!". Mark Storace's Krokus, however, quickly become the most popular Swiss hard rock band, eventually incorporated heavy metal with 1980's Metal Rendez-Vous. Their 1983 Headhunter sold two million copies, making it the best-selling Swiss record in history and breaking the band into the United States and other countries.

At about the same period, there were a number of punk and pub rock influenced bands, including the Looney Tunes, The Swiss Horns, Red Devil Band, Circus from Basel and Irrwisch.

In the early 1980s, the band Celtic Frost emerged from Zürich, the band eventually released pivotal albums like To Mega Therion, which revolutionized heavy metal.

Possibly the most successful progressive bands to come from Switzerland,Weggis Lucerne Switzerland progressive rock's Flame Dream(with new member Californian Los Angeles guitarist Dale Hauskins);released their third album "Out In The Dark" on Vertigo Records, Phonogram hiring English producer John Acock(Steve Hackett).Flame Dream continued to tour extensively throughout Switzerland and Europe using five semi trucks along with eighteen roadies,carrying a spectacular sound system,a color clustered giant extravagant light show.Recording four more albums,and three singles on the Vertigo label;and mostly recording at Patrick Moraz's Aquarius Studios in Geneva,Switzerland along with engineer Jean Ristori.Patrick Moraz Aquarius Studios,which was the first one with 48 tracks facilities in Geneva , Switzerland was a creative mega magnetic for recording signed European progressive rock bands,including Eloy, English jazz fusion guitarist John McLaughlin and Lucerne Weggis Switzerland's progressive rock band Flame Dream ;and in 1980 recruited very young Californian Los Angeles guitarist Dale Hauskins as a member of Flame Dream . Flame Dream recorded one album on Philips Records ; and five albums on the Vertigo Phonogram Records and three singles on Vertigo Phonogram Records .
